Story About Former RB Coach Elmer Redd

This video came across my FB feed and I thought I would share. Former UH S/LB 6’4" 220 lbs., Randy Thornton, recalls a conversation with UH RB Coach Elmer Redd. Elmer is a legend in East Texas HS Ball, and was the first African-American Coach at UH on Bill Yeoman’s staff. Coach Redd was UH RB Coach from 1970-1986. Coach Redd was one-of-a-kind.

Randy played in the NFL and spent some time in professional wrestling, at World Championship Wrestling (WCW). A 6’4" defensive player big enough to play LB and quick enough to play S. Randy, Do you have any eligibility left?

I follow Thornton on facebook. Has had some heart problems recently, but continues to lift weights and train as he waits for a transplant.

In our great 60-40 win over UT, he had one of the INT runbacks for a TD, and many tackles, alongside Johnny Jackson who had three pick sixes.

Later wrestled in WCW as “Swoll.”

Fellow Coogs,
Coach Redd was a legend in East Texas. He was a beloved coach and a big help for CBY . I was able to attend one of CBY’s weekday practices and at the end Coach Redd was sitting outside the office on the steps. There was a few of us listening to what he wanted his RBs to do . He said “we don’t want them to pat their feet”. He was saying he did not want his backs to run in place while they were deciding where to go. He wanted them moving forward under full power. Great guy and great coach !
