I found this in an article about kstate attendance
Apparently they have issues as well
Students who don’t show up and fans that quit at halftime
Controversial student policy for tix
But I like it and think we should probably do the same
Reward those who use the tix give them higher claiming status like an airline loyalty tier
New Student Ticketing Policy: For the 2026 season, K-State Athletics introduced a tiered mobile-app claiming system for student tickets. The new rules penalize students who claim tickets but fail to scan in, which has drawn mixed reactions and friction from parts of the student body.
I have a HS senior daughter and we have been touring tons of colleges. It is very interesting to see the different student tickets policies. Example, UTennessee has a point system and the more you attend, the more you move up in the ranks to secure the more desirable tickets. I am all for rewarding those who show up!
I know UH students right now are frustrated that guest tix are not available on Saturday.
I would think maybe try the carrot instead of the stick?
Maybe you could do something where claiming and scanning into football games gets you status for claiming basketball tickets or something like that? Sure you might still have kids who show up, scan and leave, but at that point its someone who is dedicated enough to wanting status for basketball that im not bothered by it.
Im saying the part about penalizing for not showing up may discourage people who are on the fence from claiming for a meh game because they dont want to get punished when its time for a bigger game, especially our students who dont have a culture and tradition of going to the games just being what everyone does. So make the reward something juicy enough that the students actually want to come to an 11 am game against UCF.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but the student service fee in their tuition gives that one student a “free” ticket. It doesn’t give a friend or date a ticket unless they too are a UH student.
Since the fee is part of the tuition, they’re not actually free.
Make it where the students have to scan in, but also have to scan out, for it to count them as being there. And make the scan out be no earlier than the end of the third-quarter.
Not coming to a so-called “meh” game is on them but I’d definitely like to reward the students who came to that “meh” game with better seats for the premium games.

I have looked into to this before, one school I saw, Rutgers, has free student tickets, but students can pay for priority tickets which guarantees them tickets every game and to 1 basketball game, in the past they included a t-shirt and free tailgate ect, for $100 a year, financial it’s probably a loss for the University but it is the building blocks of a season ticket base and identifies who you need to market to 1 or 2 years out of school.
I really think starting the season on a Thursday night last year really helped with student attendance, we hit 9k 3 times last season.
