Superman

Anybody seen it? Not sure we needed another Superman movie but I’m interested in seeing what James Gunn can do wirh the DC universe.

Saw it last night…I actually liked it!

Mind you, I grew up with episodes of Superman the Animated Series on WB39 in the 90’s, so that formed the basis of my idea on what Superman should be like, but I also grew up watching re-runs of Christopher Reeve’s Superman movies even before that, so I was influenced by some of that, too.

I believe this movie incorporates elements of all these Superman iterations (including Zack Snyder’sMan of Steel’) and shockingly balances them very well…I was genuinely surprised by that. Also, the actor plyaing Supes lookes a lot like Henry Cavill, so it almost seems like you’re seeing Cavill in some of the fight sequences.

Among the standout characters to me are: Superman, Lois Lane, Lex Luthor, Green Lantern, Mr. Terrific, Super Dog (which coming from Zack Snyder’s DCEU, I thought was RIDICULOUS, but actually works out well here in terms of story & character development imo)…It was also cool seeing Jimmy Olsen on screen doing meaningful things and not getting killed off 5 mins after he’s introdcued like in Zack Snyder’s DCEU.

There are also some cinematic action shots that are Zack Snyder-worthy and gave me that sense of grandiosity that Man of Steel managed to convey at times.

In sum, I believe this movie is worth the ticket cost & I recommend experiencing this movie in Dolby Cinema.

thanks, i’ll still wait for it on cable; been off dc since the flash showed up. the flash was a bad ass and supposedly the only one who could go toe to toe with superman, they made him the comic sidekick.

I’m not well-versed in the actual comic book lore, so I cant comment on the Flash (I’m more of a Batman, Superman & Green Lantern fan), but im hopeful that they’ll get it right this time since it’s a completely new/separate DC Universe.

I saw it and it was an absolute mess. It had some good moments but not enough to make it even a good movie. Zac Snyder was accused of being to grim and dark in his version, but Gunn went too far the other way, it almost felt like a parody. If you watch Peacemaker on HBO, it has that kind of tone.

Gunn is a one hit wonder.

Ok, so is it better or worse than “Batman v Superman?”

Hollywood has run out of ideas to create new genres. I tend not to watch superhero movies anymore, especially Superman.

Money grab. It would serve Hollywood right if they were financially forced to make more low cost, less violent, highly entertaining movies.

Feel the same about John Wick, a genre totally void of common sense and hardly enjoyable because the viewer knows beforehand that he’ll prevail against dozens, if not, a hundred professional killers.

Funny you mention low buget original and entertaining. That is John Wick, the original was made with a 20 million dollar budget and went on to make 90 million. Horror is the most profitable with movies like Paranormal and Anabelle.

Studios would rather swing for the fencea with recycles properties, it is safer.

Much of the.kind of content you might want is available on streaming services.

$217 million global box office opening; leader
so far I think this season.

All I’ve seen is the movie previews. From that it just looked …I dunno best word to use …awkward or clumsy.

Fantastic Four previews seemed kinda more
on the silly side too. Was looking forward to
first great F4 movie.

Maybe I’ve just outgrown the whole superhero
genre at this point.

Edit : Jurassic Park rebirth is at
$532.7 million. Read some bad reviews, but
everybody in my party( 3 adults , 3 kids)gave it very high marks.

I hope the FF movie is good.

If it is it’ll be the first.

Guardians of the Galaxy is a hit…Peacemaker is a hit. I’d say that’s two, in comic book movies. I forget what else he did besides Super.

?

I’d say it’s better in terms of story…Batman v Superman had better visuals, but that’s all Zack Snyder is really good at tbh.

No, the HBO Max (or whatever it is called today) series with John Cena. I don’t think James Gunn had anything to do with that Clooney/Kidman flick. Hadn’t thought about that flick in a while.

Is Superman supposed to be corny?

I don’t think so (but it’s just my opinion), but Gunn’s visions is a hard 180-degree pivot from the dark, grim and it needs more rain vision that Zack Snyder had for Superman. It is closer to the Donner version of Superman, but it continously misses the opportunities that movie did to tell us what Superman was about. I did not enjoy it as a whole; it had parts that were good but too many that just didn’t work and many parts of the plot that just didn’t work.

Straight up Superman? Yeah a bit corny because he’s a bit corny. But it’s why when you make Superman movies you absolutely have to hit it out of the park with the villains.

Haven’t seen it yet, but my friends who have said it was enjoyable but very jumbled trying to do too many things in one movie. They said Gunn tried to essentially set up the entire universe in one movie, which is never a good thing.

I didnt think anyone could pull that part off, but if you grew up with Superman the Animated Series (like me), I feel like he set it up just right. It feels like an episode from this series brought to life.

I can see how the casual viewer or Znyder-bro might think it’s jumbled, but I’m actually looking fwd to how this Universe plays out.
