Tackling

Our tackling, especially in the secondary was exceptionally bad yesterday. And it’s not just us, it’s all over the country. Is it me or is tackling not coached the way it once was? It’s crazy how many 4-6 yard hitch routes turn into 20-30 yard gains due to poor tackling. Am I the only one who thinks this?

Our secondary does seem adverse to physical play in general and form tackling in particular.

Lone exception to physical play; Kentrell Webb does seem to enjoy hitting and is the only one to consistently do it.

Glad you bring this up. Tackling is paramount to football. Bad tackling started all the way back to the late 90’s. It is an indication on how football is taught at an early age, high school and at the college level. There are no excuses for it. I brought this up a few times before:

HCWF is a master at tacking but how do you “tweak” 10 years + of bad teaching?
Bad tackling is getting worse at the nfl level. Again, this is inexcusable. At the same time proper tackling reduces injuries. That is why football coaches at all level have to question how they teach. This is basics or Football 101. I truly believe that good tacklers “read” the opposing offense better.

Rather than tackling, I’ve noticed a trend of defensive players try to stand up the ball carrier in hopes of stripping the ball away.

Huh? I’m pretty sure bad tackling has always been a thing, just like good tackling has always been a thing.

Huh? Yes this has been getting worse and worse. Pete Carroll and other Coaches “sounded” the alarm way back then.

you’re not the only one who’s noticed…why don’t they just wrap runner’s legs!! Like the old days!!

It is teaching/coaching 101. It becomes a real issue when these players start college ball. Correcting bad habits takes time and is a major Coaching work.

Armstrong’s guys seemed more physical last year. Not sure if one great nose tackle should be that big of a difference. There are eleven guys out there.

What ever happened to that ASU transfer?

DB Myles Rowser, transfer from Arizona St. is stiill in legal limbo, along with WR Stephon Johnson, on the NCAA court cases involving 5 for 5 eligibility.

My son is a 7th grade linebacker. I’m amazed at how little they practice tackling during the week.

No… Tackling and is the most difficult aspect of football to teach and perfect because no coach in his right mind wants to lose a player in a tackling drill.

You can practice all you want… but you either love to hit or you don’t!

Hitting and tackling has to be in a person’s DNA. Some players just don’t have it.
