TCU Band!

The UH band back in the day under Bill Moffit was extremely entertaining. It was named the Showband of the Southwest, or some such moniker. They marched up and down the field and made formations, not this boring moving back and forth thing that the current director keeps putting out there. It doesn’t even seem like anything new.

Do we have a scholarship funding pool for the Spirit of Houston?

Taylor Swift’s mom went to UH

Yes. Every returning member receives compensation, I believe. And there are individual scholarships available, as well.

The band’s music and show choices aren’t hindered by funding.

Just STOP. You know we like playing loud obnoxious music over our band anyway.

This is SPOT ON! Been asking Band admin about returning the color guard etc for several years now. It’s now being discussed openly in the stands regarding the lack of color guard, entertainment at the games and how “ANEMIC” the SOH looks compared to other visiting bands (both conference and non-conference). Hopefully, (SOH) can submit a survey to the fanbase and take note of the GameDay corrections that Nunez and his staff made this past game. There are many HS bands that literally “run circles” around SOH. As a former SOH member, I can speak on this subject with knowledge of what’s lacking in comparison with our conference mates. As for the sound, SOH has remarkedly improved! If we can put sound and showmanship together, this would be an awesome sight to see! DO BETTER SOH! #GoCoogs

United Way is a charity. Why doesn’t the UH Band hit them up also?

Of course I am joking.

And across the street TSU’s band has consistently traveled over the years - so does their school value their band more than UH values theirs? Why have a band to keep them locked up? and you wonder why there’s lack of school spirit

Beyoncé chose them to be on TV with her

Well, in fairness, both those bands have been getting Big12 money for 30 years more than us.

Well…. Maybe not TCU

Ocean of Soul and Motion of the Ocean and Waves color guard killed the SWAC this year. The Car Wash performance was epic.

When the national anthem and alma mater have been played before the start of the game, and spirited anticipation ought to be peaking amongst those awaiting the kickoff, what do we hear? Well, it’s more of the same monotonous, monotonal, tuneless talky rap music that was being played during pregame warmups. And by golly, that inharmonious sound keeps going until the kicker’s foot actually hits the ball.

What the hell? Why right before kickoff isn’t our band playing? Why aren’t we hearing the UH Fight Song being played? Or any song that’s uplifting? - This is an example of both literal and figurative tone deafness on the part of UH.

And is it any wonder that our football team then proceeds to play the first quarter so flat on both offense and defense that they are 14 points behind after an uninspiring 15 minutes?

No more pre-game rap “lullabies” please!

How about Baker Mayfield’s mom?

Matthew McConahey’s (sp?) dad.

I agree but its a case of everyone wanting to create a certain environment to cater to athletes - when did college football games need in-game hosts or DJs? lol

to me the fans ceate the environment

People on this site bragged over and over about how cool it was that one of the schools we played had a DJ in the student section and how we need to do that to get more students to the games.

We did it, and now some on here make it sound like the worst thing the school has ever done. It’s like UH is damned if we do, damned if we don’t.

I can’t attend games because of a medical condition, so I haven’t seen the SoH for some time. On a clip shown during the Fox halftime show however, they looked like they were dancing and not marching. Even some of rhe analysts in the studio commented about it.

I think its because they are getting back to their seats after the pregame show on the field.

I can remember the days when part of the band would go into different parts of the Astrodome and play Bud Bones. Could/should they do that at TDECU?

This is only clip I could find, and it used to sound better than this…IMO

I don’t really object to DJs playing supplemental music. But, to quote Cheryl Crow, “This ain’t no disco.”, and therefore the DJ ought to be playing music that is totally appropriate to the activities of on-campus college football game at all times. The game is what the customers/fans came for, not to chill to some droning atonal rap.

Moreover, I doubt that many of our students decide to attend a UH football game because they really want to hear some rap music. Actually, probably none, I’d wager.

And, as far as the athletes are concerned, they are all getting paid now, so they aren’t there just to be musically entertained. But if you send them out on the field with soporific, mindless music rolling around in their minds, you are liable to then see some sleepy, unmindful football get played. You know, just like during the first quarter against TCU.

I was a member of a college marching band for four years. In my final year I was the band commander. I know that they were trying to get back to their seats at the time of kickoff. But if they are not yet seated by then there is no reason that some or all of them can’t form up beyond the end zone and play immediately prior to kickoff. They all already know the Fight Song. All that would be required to make that happen is a whistle and for the band director to decide to make it happen.
