The university doesn’t treat the band or the school of music well.
The fact that Tech and TCU bands were here speaks volumes. The only “away” game we could afford to send anyone from the Spirit of Houston was Rice.
It’s my understanding that the SoH is privately funded. So if anyone here with deep pockets wants to open up their checkbook to help send the SoH (including the cheerleaders, cougar dolls, mascots, and flag runners) to all away games with the team, please do so.
Spirit of Houston kicked ass during the tailgate, during the game, and did well at halftime.
Make no mistake, TCU band is good and they brought in marimbas and the color guard, but SOH has kept the student section on their feet to keep the energy to help win the game, something our team fell short.
At Rice, when the team was playing mediocre, it was the band playing womp womp that helped sparked the fans and team to score before the half.
The band has done a great job. TCU played Queen. So the song was more popular, but Spirit played some killer sets this year that included Boston, Selena, and Temptations. Don’t undermine their work.
Uh. The problem isn’t lack of travel money to away games. The problem is they are not keeping up with the competition with the other Big 12 Schools. This year has been especially disappointing!
Legacy. The other Big 12 Bands are running circles around us. I’m not talking about school spirit. The band does great in that department. But, when it comes to halftime, the other bands are showing us up! Better show design - when the band actually moves around. Better music to entertain! Can we have a little sound impact to get the audience attention? Sorry, but the band is boring at halftime!
There are parts of UH’s athletic presentation that still seem like UH is a G5 program. The band is one of them. They honored Bertman for his years of service. I think he has done a good job but maybe it’s time for a change.
I’m not talking about money to travel to away games. I’m talking about home games when the band has almost the full halftime. Can we see a complete show? With some great show design (musically and visually) that can actually get the crowd’s attention? Sorry, but this year the halftimes have been less than impressive.
Agreed. As a former band member, the TCU performance, musically, was as good as I’ve heard in some time. They had an electric bass and guitar for goodness sakes. We can learn from them and take it up a notch.
The other bands are larger in numbers and louder but are not “running circles” around Spirit of Houston. Better music is subjective. The old school Temptation 50-60s medley was better than Queen for me. Boring to you doesn’t mean boring to everyone.
Sorry for the repeat. Message disappeared and I obviously hit the magic repeat button that is somewhere. Yes, I know ctrl v will repeat but I never hit that.
Yes, the ~$500 million financial advantage that the legacy Big 12 schools have enjoyed over UH has allowed for disproportionate funding of their athletics programs. If I recall correctly, UH will finally get an equal share of the Big 12’s media rights, et al, distributions sometime next June.
We’ve been at a HUGE financial disadvantage for decades and so we’ve got a LOT of ground to make up! Remember, Rome wasn’t built in a day.
