Anyone remember the 1995 pre-season Houston Oilers exhibition game vs the San Diego Chargers in the Astrodome that was cancelled because of the unsafe condition of the turf? After inspecting the field, the NFL cancelled the game about 90 minutes after what was supposed to be kickoff. Fans were furious, and it was one more reason, among many, to hate Oilers owner Bud Adams.
Here is what happened:
“A freshly installed, 10-yard strip of Astroturf at midfield—featuring a new Oilers logo and helmet—failed to mesh properly with the rest of the stadium’s artificial turf, creating dangerous divots and uneven seams over the hard surface beneath.”
I remember the sports coverage on the local news that showed the uneven seams. It was definitely not safe to play.
I bring this up because it appears UH is set to patch up areas for this season, with the intent to replace the entire turf next year.
The NFL exhibition game between the San Diego Chargers and the Houston Oilers was cancelled Saturday night due to unplayable field conditions at The…
One more time on my soapbox. I wish UH would replace turf with real grass. It is cooler and safer for the players. From what I have seen, UH has an excellent Grounds Crew.
I’ve always thought the artificial surface is part of the reason the stadium gets so incredibly hot in early fall (or as we call it in Houston, Summer Part II: The Revenge!) Live grass “sweats” to keep cool. Turf just absorbs the sun like a frying pan!
Then again, it would be sweltering in there no matter what at that time of year, I guess. And here we are only just now exiting Pre-summer and entering Summer Part I!
@Duce630 He admits that it’s going to fail eventually… so, he’s admitting to UH planning to play on a patch repair fix that WILL fail eventually… we just don’t know when…
Maybe the waivers we have each team sign before playing on our janky a$$ turf will cover it… /s
sounds to me like there is foundation damage and turf damage. The turf damage can be patched short term but the foundation damage will still need to be repaired.
I don’t think turf vs grass has much to do with it. Kyle Field is grass and that’s the hottest place I’ve ever watched a game. Probably affects the players on the field more, but I don’t think it affects fans in the stands at all.

You and LITERALLY EVERYBODY ELSE. Allstate is also bad, we have Nationwide and when the tree fell on the house, their initial estimate was way low and it took time, but we were able to get them to come up to an agreeable amount without too much craziness. We started at $122k and settled at $388k.
Who runs the department that allowed this church to bring in all this equipment that damaged our football stadium…
The AD isn’t involved in that…?
I’m sure there are other folks liable, too; but Eddie is definitely part of the directors/executives at UH that failed in the execution of this stadium rental to this church plain & simple.
As I understand it, the church (their contractors) violated the agreement by using overweight equipment, and this is what likely caused the extensive damage. I wouldn’t say he “allowed” them to do this, but I do think more could have been done to prevent it, like having someone on-site to ensure that this didn’t happen.
