The Astro Dome

The Astro Dome was an integral part of our athletic rise. UH should buy it and make it a satellite campus.

Two questions:
Is it free of asbestos?
Do we have the money?
If one of the two is no I do not see how we could.

Asbestos free is key. If it were the case the Astrodome could become a great filming/tv stage. Long Beach/L.A. has one next to Queen Mary.

No thanks, just knock the dump down

Buy it for the land then blow it up IF asbestos free!

I know I’ll get pushback, but I really think they need to tear it down and replace it with a green space

Plant trees, create a park

But if it ever gets torn down, it likely just turns into parking or a luxury hotel

That narrator reminds me of the “boom goes the dynamite” guy.

That’s actually interesting.

But I feel that if Houston wanted to develop some sort of film/TV district, then it would’ve already happened

If Houston could create its own mini Hollywood though that would be cool

Turn it into a world class, indoor semi A/C zoo.

Redesign to allow for proper ventilation.

Sell the land where the current zoo resides and use the money to offset the conversion costs.

Create a Jurassic Park/Jungle theme for ground level for large animals.

Build ski lifts/gondolas to transport visitors from one end of the zoo to another.

With the multiple levels of the Dome, each level could feature other creatures: birds, reptiles, small animals.

Provide electric trains, restaurants, restrooms, shops, etc. Reduce the outdoor parking lots and create a green space/park area. Remove most of the seating and replace the space with something with utility value.

A well ventilated structure to minimize the animal smell. Animals and visitors will no longer have to endure Houston heat, humidity and rain.

Most of all the Dome is preserved, functional with strong utility to Houston community.

It would instantly make the Dome Zoo a major entertainment attraction and give visitors to Houston something additional to look forward to other than NASA and Galveston.

Should have been done long ago.

Not knocking it down because it is historic been declared a national landmark, first ever of its kind. Houston needs to figure out a way for it to pay its way

No motion of the last quote from the video?

“like the roman colosseum, where people could go watch a murder” then had a newspaper clipping of UH’s 100 - 6 win over Tulsa. Awesome.

From what I understand, it would cost more to tear it down than it would to just leave it standing, which is why we’ve gotten to this point.

They had escalators in the 60’s? Lol

Indoor snow skiing or this…

The only reason it is designated landmark status is because judge Emmett made it so, after Houstonians voted to allow it to be torn down. His sentimental value to the dome had him do that.

Do you think that he talks like that in real life, or that is just his YouTube reading voice?

Regardless of who or how it got the Historical Landmark Designation which it justly deserves. It is what it is. You don’t tear down ( the modern day Roman Coliseum ) something that was a game changer in architecture and it’s purpose. Houston is stuck with it and needs repurpose it so it can pay its way.

"The Astrodome, located in Houston, Texas, is indeed considered a significant landmark. It opened in 1965 as the world’s first domed multi-purpose stadium and was nicknamed the “Eighth Wonder of the World.” The Astrodome revolutionized stadium design and sports architecture, introducing innovations like artificial turf (initially called “AstroTurf”) and air conditioning in a large sports venue.

In 2014, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places, officially recognizing its historical significance. The structure was groundbreaking for its time - a 208-foot-high dome spanning 642 feet that could host both baseball and football games while protecting spectators from Houston’s heat and unpredictable weather"

Uncle Tilman should convert it to a giant Casino.

I got it

What about a Giant Walmart combined with a Great Wolf Lodge? Everybody wins.

I think it’s an impressive structure. Certainly we can find something to do with it, rather than make it another parking lot just like the old Astroworld site.

I think it would be cool to open up the sides and let it be open-air. Or add humongous garage doors and make it The World’s Greatest Ice House.
