We’re doing the best we can to make us a viable candidate. We have to keep pushing athletics to win and keep improving academics, especially our grad rates.
Things will change in the next decade; all we can do is put ourselves in the best position to take advantage of any opportunity.
UI would post this information in response to the author of the PacificSixteen blog/Twitter account:
"A&M beats UT in fan survey
Staff reports
PUBLICATION: Houston Chronicle (TX)
SECTION: Sports DATE: November 15, 2013
EDITION: 3 STAR
Page: 4
Here’s some news that should rattle Longhorns everywhere: Texas A&M now claims more fans among the state’s residents than does the University of Texas.
In a telephone survey conducted Nov. 1-4, 22 percent of the 500 respondents identified themselves as A&M fans, while UT mustered support from 20 percent of those surveyed.
It’s the first time A&M has ranked ahead of UT in the survey conducted by Public Policy Polling in Raleigh, N.C., spokesman Tom Jensen said via email. The question has been asked just twice - in 2011 and this year - since the company began polling in Texas in 2008, he said.
As often seems to be the case, the clear winner of the collegiate fan-base question was “Another school/not a fan,” which claimed 26 percent.
The also-rans included Houston, 10 percent; Baylor, 8 percent; Texas Tech, 5 percent; TCU, 4 percent; UTEP, 3 percent; and SMU, 2 percent."
I copied this information from the Chronicle Archives in order to send it in a Tweet to PacificSixteen. Please note that UH garnered 10% of the vote in this survey. That placed UH 3rd in fan support state-wide, with much of that (but not all) concentrated in SE Texas.
I “pointed this out” rather forcefully to the Chronicle staff and they re-posted this article with a new headline emphasizing UH’s ranking. Note also that this survey was taken before UH’s phenomenal rise in 2015 and 2016. I haven’t seen a recent survey but it is reasonable to assume UH has risen in the fan wars.
Note also that UH shows a state-wide fan base TWICE the size of that of Texas Tech. We understand that Tech is artificially propped up by UT. There is no reason to assume that UH’s ranking has changed significantly since 2013. In fact it is reasonable to assume that it has grown significantly with the success UH has had over the past 2 years.
All in all, in a rational world this should make UH very attractive for PAC 12 expansion. Of course UH fans know all about how rational this process can be.
I guess you read different quotes than I did. In fact what she said was the exact opposite of a push to the PAC-12, She is pushing for more revenue sharing and for the conferences to be realigned to be more commute friendly for the athletes. After a statement like “regionalization would also reduce the amount of time student-athletes spend on the road in competition and allow them to better enjoy the college experience” it would be hypocritical for her to push for admission to a west coast conference.

I understand what you are saying Jimmy but she had the choice to post this picture with the PAC12 commissioner. She knew the responses that this would generate. She has been a great leader, our best leader. She did not take a picture with the local conferences be small12 or SEC. Anyways, I see it as a positive point. She keeps us in the news. That is a major plus.
Of course regionalism is the best solution for everyone. And it is good for us. UNTIL something better comes along. If we have to fly to the East Coast for games we might as well fly to the West Coast. But I predict more and more teams will opt to find ways to keep non-revenue sports local if they can.
On the other hand setting up the PAC 16 with 4-team pods accomplishes much the same thing. Assuming they go after UT and OU, add UH and one other and pair with Arizona, Arizona St, Colorado & Utah comes pretty close as far as travel is concerned. Play 6 out of that group every year plus 3 from rest of conference. We can manage that. Not much worse than what we have now. Damn sure more interesting than our current set up.
Reiterating what was posted above, it is likely the PacificSixteen blog is being run by a Tech alum to promote Tech’s inclusion in an expanded PAC 12. Pretty clever. I’m done with it.
itcoog, you have an embarrassing lack of faith in our school and our leadership, considering how hard they are working to make a P5 bid happen in future.
Look. We need to focus on being the best G5 we can be. That is where we are and we should make the most of it. If you prefer rainbows and unicorns that’s fine. But don’t do so by neglecting your current situation by living in fantasy land.
It’s a simple deal. You focus on process and let the results take care of themselves.
There’s no use spending any mental energy on things out of your control (such as how 12 school presidents in the Pacific Time Zone might vote one day).
Sure, you set goals. But you don’t set goals out of your control. You set goals that are within your control, and then you formulate a plan to reach those goals.
I don’t know about you, but I had a ton of fun at the Peach Bowl. I would enjoy the hell out of a Sweet 16 run in basketball or a CWS run in baseball.

Friends, there is no point in arguing about chasing dreams or not.
The fact is that the so called process has taken us down to first C-USA, then AAC. Just a few months ago the so called process told us that we were not worthy of the small12.
Our only aim is to get into a P5. That also means winning every game in front of us. So you see we are all on the same page.
Every year that passes by is an insult to all of us. That is the way I take it and I will never accept it. We have to be united and push as hard our administration to aim for that goal. I am 100% confident that they feel the same urgency. We have to let them know that we are furious and deem our situation as being unacceptable. I will go one step further. When the New Year’s Bowl G5 ends then now what? Do you think for a second that the P5’s like the idea of having a G5 Team compete for a multi million Dollar bowl game? You know the answer. That is why it is critical to be as determined and not content with what we have. Mrs. Khator and Mr. Fertitta are not accepting the current status-quo. Neither should you.
Every avenue that is out there to get us into a P5 should be explored including litigation.
I will say it again. I love the fact that Fertitta stirs up the pot. espn and Corso’s latest words are just the latest of trying to lessen our ascension.
Someone that competes should always aim for the highest level. U of H should always try to do the same.
It is not that we are not worthy of the big 12, it is that they are afraid of the completion (both on and off the field) and refuse to slice their money pie up. Greed plays more to this than anything we have or have not done.
I can easily see the argument being used, when we make another run at the playoffs, that Houston is a P5 program playing in a G5 conference. There’s a strange compliment to that but I would rather leave no doubt.

The Raiders move to LV in two years or sooner. The PAC12 TV contract is due around 2020…I am not sure on the date. Don’t you think UNLV is burning the phone line right now to join the PAC12? UNLV is the perfect “bridge” for a UH and others to invite. While UNLV is in the PST zone it does offer “cheap” airfare. PAC12 going to Asia? For what real reason(s) when you can get into a central time zone.
espn against it? Does the PAC12 want to implode or pursue a National/local option? Yes, I am dreaming but I rather dream than be content.
