The Hidden Rise Of Chase McCarty — Attacking His Redshirt Season at Houston,

More minutes next season?

I think he was so focused on staying within his lane/ role in Sampson’s system and didn’t really have a lot of opportunities to shoot the ball, that when he did they didn’t always hit.

He had a lower 3 %…

I understand smaller sample size…

Man, that’s a tough question!

this is tough…I think McCarthy will have a more established role as a specific role player who has assigned duties (3 and D guy), i see a steady 10-15mins . Mercy is more variable; star player to deep bench are realistic… 6 mins some games to 32min are on the table for him

mercy has comfortably the best scoring off the dribble potential on roster… but we aren’t putting a 19% from 3 guard on the floor

But in all seriousness, I think chase has an easier path? With his ability to play small ball 4. That position kinda being up in the air rn between Ramon, chase and McFarland. You can make an argument chase is likely our first SF or PF off bench. Also no guarantee(although likely), that harwell starts over him. If he does, harwell will likely have those freshman moments like every fr does. Just seems like an easier path to minutes. Vs Mercy having Uzan and Sharp who will be the staples of the team. Not to mention 5 star KF.

Damn. Wonder how long it would take to make 1000 shots? Assuming you’re a decent shooter. Does he have someone feeding him the ball or is he fetching the basketballs after shooting?

He was in a slump last season…too much thinking… he’s gonna ball out this season… UHHHHHHH!!!

Right. As I mentioned, with him thinking so much about his role in Sampson’s offense and limited opportunities to shoot he ball, the few that he did, didn’t always go in.

Probably has a machine feeding him

He does

I think his lack of intensity on defense hurt him early on and thus he was benched and in the dog house.
But to his credit Mercy hung in there and although he got little playing time he came out and played hard.
The kid has talent, oodles of potential as an offensive machine, but in Sampson’s camp you have to play defense as aggressively as you do on offense.
The fact that he didn’t portal out says a bunch about Mercy’s character to me. I think he wants to come back and prove himself in a big way.

Agree w/ you here. I’ll add that it says a lot about his maturity, upbringing and the type of people that he has giving him advice.

He’s definitely playing the long game. Similar to Ramon. You can trwnsfer, and “shine” somewhere else or get better everyday here.

He had the deer in the headlights look last season, could have just been the freshmen eyes but did not see the fire. To be fair, it took Shead a while too.

I think he looked much more confident by the end of the season in the few minutes he got…

I again observe that our quality depth is unreal.

Looks like the best depth in Cougar history.

This is definitely true on defense. He was totally lost and a step slow defensively almost every time he got on the floor early in the season, but you could see the upside. You could tell he had figured some things out later in the season, even though his shot wasn’t there.

Actually it may depend on if he can defend.
