The Houston vs Duke Matchup

I like Fanta, seems like a genuine dude, the other two on the other hand…

This analysis is more optimistic than A&M😂 like I tell people all the time the tournament is about matchups. Great stuff @pesik

Love the write up, but lets remember. last year he said we would match up well with Miami

At the start of the tournament, the analysts were drooling over Kentucky. Kentucky was going to knock out Houston and win the south. Kentucky loses 1st round and the same talking heads jump on their next chosen one Duke. Houston could beat UCONN in the title game and those guys would still say UCONN has the best team. Who cares just win

Experience > Youth

#1 UH will have to beat the jersey. The name itself brings reverence. Because of that, #2 UH will have to beat 8 guys (again). #3 Duke is young and they have NEVER seen 3rd Ward basketball like we are going to put on them. #4 UH might have a longer rotation than Duke- they stick with their first 5- we might be able to play 8-9. IMO they will get 8-10 points just from the refs, but if UH stays out of foul trouble and we play our game we should be OK.

Don’t sell ourselves short.

UH is top 10 in Final Four Appearances and I believe UH has the second longest Sweet 16 streaknin the country and the most wins in all of college Basketball over the last 4-5 years.

It’s Houston vs Duke…not UTSA vs Duke.

We just need to finish the job this year!

Every podcast I’ve listened to with the exception of one points to our aggressive play and fouling with the reference to the 43 FT attempts by A&M. I even heard a couple of guys mention our fouls per possession ranking being near the bottom, but they all fail to mention A&M’s elite level of drawing fouls.

The talking heads just roll our aggression into a positive thing for Duke. I even heard one guy say Duke is really good at getting to the foul line when they are ranked 229 vs A&M ranked 8th.

It is pure hogwash on the narrative being spun. C’mon…do your damn homework.

I agree w/ coach K that the key is kicking the ball out for 3’s. If Duke can pass quickly like the way Dickinson did against us they can knock down 3’s at an efficient rate. The key for the Coogs is getting to Filip quickly and disrupting his passes. This is where the refs can either let the kids play or easily put our guys in foul trouble. If the refs let them play I think we can make it difficult for Filip to pass out for open 3s.

I’d say 60-70% of the national talking heads are picking Duke. The more niche (blogs/podcasts/twitter) analytic folks I follow it’s probably reversed.

One thing I’m surprised I haven’t heard more people bring up is the coaching matchup. Scheyer has coached 70 games Kelvin has 700+ wins. Scheyer very well might turn out to be a great coach, but he is still pretty green.

FWIW, here is a list of the coaches that have knocked UH out of the tournament under Sampson:

John Beilein, John Calipari, Scott Drew, Jay Wright, Jim Larranaga.

Combined those 5 have won 3200+ games, and their record in the NCAA tournament is 153-73. They all guided teams to the Final Four, 15 Final Fours in total, along with 4 National Championships.

Scheyer is 3-1 in the Tournament.

Once Houston wins they will jump on the band wagon of Marquett or NC State you will see.

Live by the 3, die by the 3.

Oddsshark shows we opened -3, got as high as -4.5 and it’s currently -4. According to the talking heads, we should all bet our life savings on Duke ML.

Just from my UH experience. I like our odds better when everyone expects us to lose.

Why is the spread getting larger? Is this the roach injury?

Good question. Personally, I think we either win big or lose big. For some reason I just don’t think this game will be close. Couldn’t tell you why. Just a feeling.

I could see that like the Arizona S16 game or the Miama S16 game.
