The Houston vs Duke Matchup

I’ll take the AZS 16 game please dear God.

Do not let us be MIAMI’d again.

Exactly. If Duke’s shooting is on fire, they win big. If they are even mediocre, we win big. We need to chase them off the 3 point line and force them to try to beat us in the paint. They won’t be able to beat us in the paint; only from deep. But that’s a whole lot of energy to expend for an entire game with little depth. I think we can do it, but then I’m concerned about dead legs on Sunday like we had 2 years ago against Villanova. Dang it, I wish we still had TA and Tugler!

Being the odds on favorite hasn’t treated UH well. Not in football or basketball

Officiating will be an important role in this game. If it’s called tight like the A&M game, where our key players are neutralized defensively, it will be a tough out for the Coogs. If the refs let them play like most of the NCAA tournament games, I think we prevail.

I expect to see Duke quick passing to find the open three. Kansas was the blueprint. Hand in face of shooter and disrupt passing lanes. Disrupt Filipowski’s comfort level. Adjust to the referees’ whistle and stay out of foul trouble.

Only if they shoot 70% will they beat us by double digits.

Every possession will be premium, be it for ball control, free throws, spacing, rebounds, rotations and decent scoring.

2 emotional games in 3 days is where the Big12 regular season schedule conditioning should come in.

Need our defense to show up tomorrow night. A&M guards blew right past us the other night and then they demolished us on the boards. Hopefully it was just a match up issue and not a sign of more to come.

Absolutely need Roberts to be as healthy as possible. If he is even remotely close to his usual self I feel about as good as you can feel in an elimination game like this against a very good opponent… We have the fans, we have the defense, we have the shooters that have been hot lately, just need to put it all together.

Francis.

He just scored zero points, got zero rebounds, and fouled out.

We won anyway.

If Francis plays just ok we can beat them solidly.

Counterpoint. The Kansas guards shot a high percentage since they were wide open when HD passed over the top. We tried our monster trap defense but the quick passes to the perimeter caught our guards way out of position to defend the 3-pt line.

The question I have is whether Filipkowski has the court awareness and passing ability to handle our monster defense. I’m also curious to see if we turn him over a few times and rattle him enough to minimize his impact on the game.

All in all, I believe we can beat Duke, so long as the refs don’t inject themselves too much in the game and we’re able to guard the perimeter. If the refs let them play, I like our chances of winning. On the other hand, if the game is called tight and Filipkowski is able to find guys open on the perimeter, this game could be difficult.
