The Match-Up: Purdue vs Houston

Welcome Pacific maker of boils. I hope not to trigger my fellow UH fans, but I note that Purdue easily handled Alabama. As we all know, the transitive law applies axiomatically to sports scores - so since the red tide beat UH …

Seriously, I am curious about your impressions on whether Purdue is improved since beating Bama.

Is this an accurate depiction of CoogFans?

Seriously, do not hang around for the game thread when we give up 2 straight baskets and turn the ball over. It’s the worst version of a car wreck.

What I like about Purdue. You guys are AAU (we are trying to get there) so academically top notch and the consortium you have across the Big10 is brilliant and envied by many. Your Mascot - Boiler Makers - one of those unusual no one has that mascot and I think it has achieved the status of being the ugliest mascot on the planet next to the Banana Slugs of Cal Santa Cruz… At one time I believe your football team claimed to have the largest drum of any band in the USA. Not sure if that is still true. Other than that I assume you are in a college town. West Lafayette. I hope for a great game and of course hope the COOGS come out on top.

Wait, what?!?!? lolol

Yes, but the caveat to that is other teams have schemed Purdue better as the season has gone on. Players have shown growth on the offensive end in several ways, but individual defense is roughly the same. Team defense was really poor at the end of the season which led to a bunch of losses, but it was better the last two games. The level of competition probably played a part in that.

Purdue was able to beat Bama at their own game. I know it’s what they do, but Bama wanting to get in a shootout at Mackey was certainly a choice. Purdue usually shoots well at home, and Bama sucks on defense so it was a match made in hell for them.

The Boilermaker Special (the actual train) is actually a pretty cool mascot. I like Purdue Pete (the crazy eyed human mascot), too. He’s the stuff of nightmares, but he’s what I grew up with haha.

We still claim to have the largest bass drum, but it’s more about tradition than truth.

Yes, the West Lafayette and Lafayette area is very much a college town. There is nothing else for an hour around except corn fields. It’s classic Midwest personified.

Sometimes ya just gotta call a BYU fan out

But they also lost by 18 to Auburn, and we only lost to them by 5. That offsets the Bama win. In fact all of our losses combined for the season don’t add up to 18.

I am cognizant my sense of humor often does not translate well into written posts. You are correct that selective results comparisons can lead to absurd conclusions.

My real hope, very much realized by our Purdue visitor’s informed response, was just to get his feel of the trajectory of Purdue’s level of play.

This is a dangerous game. If the fans push the refs into a foul fest we could be in trouble. They have nothing to lose and will be hyper-aggressive on both ends of the court. It’s not about who’s the best team. Its who takes advantage of the environment.

Purdue doesn’t play like Bama or A&M so doubt it gets that bad unless we go up by 12 almost instantly

Exactly. Expect raucous hostile crowd , plus a remarkable friendly Purdue whistle.

Two quick fouls on Uzan, who’ll be under pressure playing his first sweet sixteen game.

Houston on paper should win this game, but will need Herculean effort from Sharp or Terrance to overcome refs and a hostile court.

I don’t think we need a Herculean effort from anyone as long as we’re healthy.

According to the radio broadcast, Sharp tweaked his ankle again.

Will need Terrence to get on his horse and go strong to the basket!

No finesse mid range this game. Strong finishes in the paint.

On radio broadcast. Trainers retapped it and he did play down the stretch. Just what the guys said on broadcast.

Unfortunately yes he did. It happened late in first half. He was last one to come out of tunnel for 2nd half by prob least 2 mins. Even at that point he was stretching his lower leg by the bench w/o warming up. He did finally warm up ( shots) briefly. Throughout the 2nd half ( during time outs) you could see him trying to stetch out his lower leg extremities. Definitely was bothering him. We were sitting directly across from the Coogs bench, so good view towards Coogs bench.

Well since we have the last game of the Sweet 16 and we played Saturday he gets the max amount of rest and therapy possible.

Yes, what i was thinking in 2nd half, if he could just get through game w/o getting worse, he has 5 days to get treatment. I think he will be ready to go.
