The Ryan Elvin appreciation thread

Ryan deserves one. Busts azz in practice, never misses and pays his own way at the University of Houston.

Ryan thank you!!!

Agree

And his contribution is apparent from the team’s reaction when he scores

I love walk-ons who contribute in practice and work their butts off for the love of the game.

The human victory cigar.

Kid could have actually played at a smaller time program but decided to sacrifice game time minutes to be part of a program where he learns from the best coaches in the country, plays with top level talent, and gets to be a part of a winning program.

Nothing but respect for him.

I don’t like making a big fuss when he comes in the game. It seems almost disrespectful to him. But maybe I’m not seeing it the right way. I never saw him as a mascot. I always thought he could get some things done on the court given the opportunity. I think he just wants to be one of the guys.

Is Ryan Elvin the “Rudy” of UH Basketball?

Rudy is the Ryan Elvin of Notre Dame.

I sort of get that; I used to feel that way too. My view on it is the guy doesn’t get much playing time, so I’m going to cheer my head off when he does. The team goes crazy when he hits shots (moreso than for anybody else), and I assume they wouldn’t do that if it hurt his feelings.

I think his ultimate goal is to become a coach and he made a conscious (and wise) decision to sacrifice some playing time to see the best up close.

Good story. From that story:
“He was going from 39 minutes a game to no minutes, especially for the first two years. He understood,” Deirdre said. “His long-term goal is to be a Division I coach or work in an NBA front office. Look at the connections he’s already making with Kelvin Sampson as his head coach. You can put that on your rĂ©sumĂ©. Honestly, it’s the best decision he’s made in his life.”

I too read the story a few weeks ago. Shows how each student/athlete has different wants, desires for their future as it relates to the Sport they are participating in.

I see videos where Sampson is working with him on his jumper. I’m thinking Sampson hasn’t given up on the notion that he has something to contribute on the court
at the right moment.

It would be great if he could become another Wes Van Beck, but with the level of talent we have now and we have coming in, it will be hard for him to get many minutes.

Wes was a decent player at Westside. But given his parents(who I know) I am not surprised at his success. He is playing overseas now. His parents who went to the University of Iowa are successful individuals who set a tremendous example. I officiated a few basketball games with his father. They no longer live in the Houston area however

Maybe another Elvin on the way?
