The Texas Bowl crowd proves that there are fans who care

I just don’t understand why they don’t turn out at TDECU

They will again next season… until we don’t have a shot at the CFP…

Houston fans only show up if they think the team can win it all…

Have to turn football gamedays back into a party if you want people there every game during down seasons.

Hopefully this LSU win will improve fan interest for the start of next season!

Let’s be honest. No one is going to show up for a 90 degree, 11 AM, game against Southern. Even with Southern’s band.

2.9 mill ion views is pretty good

I have always hated day games in Houston. Too hot, and the tailgating is less than normal. Play every road game at 11 am, but have the home games kick off after 3 pm.

If we played LSU at 8:15 pm on a Saturday at TDECU, place would be packed

Houston is an event city. If the game feels like that, they will show up.

Bingo.

As a non-Houstonian, it also seems that Houston folks want “heroes/star players” to root for on their team (a la Ed Oliver).

Keisean Henderson will hopefully help start that trend, but we’ll need to bring in those kinda big name players consistently.

Then maybe UH should make it’s games ‘events’? I am not a advertising/marketing guy, but I KNOW there are ways to do it- but I don’t know what they are.

Yup, agree.

We need the same hype as the offseason of 2016 in order to sell out those September games.

I come up with ideas sometimes: UH should put up a billboard in Baton Rouge with the Texas Bowl score… in July. Then come back to Houston and plaster them all over here.

With all the talk about attendance it is really mind blowing that in a city the size of Houston you can’t get 40,000 people to turn out to a major college football game. We should get 40,000 by accident and we consistently fall shy of 30,000.
I think it says more about the people than it does UH. We have our issues for sure but is it the weather, traffic, too many transplants, major pro sports city, too many options in the city or what? Its always been a problem and a suspect it always will be, short of us being consistently a top 10 program and in the national spotlight. Fix the parking situation and tailgating environment for starters.

We have less than 5,000 season ticket accounts, that’s the real problem with our fanbase.

Then when we actually do get a good attendance or buzz, we lay an egg which ruins any momentum.

LA is an even bigger city and UCLA has been in a power conference forever. Same issue. Past a certain point, the size of the city actually becomes a hindrance rather than an aid.

I would say it is a combination of these three. I do sense a sort of apathy within the alumni too. Building TDECU where it is, was also a mistake. Should have built it closer to I-45 for easier access.

I know I have posted lots of ideas for building fans in other threads, but just had a new thought to add.

Obvious the first one is triple the ad budget this summer.

But the new idea was to take the grassy area across Cullen from Fertitta Center and make it a game area for “Future Coogs”. Have a Bounce House, games, face painters, etc… Have a small cover band and maybe a couple food trucks. Open 4 hours before game time and close down with Shasta and Sasha leading the families towards the stadium about an 45min/hour before kickoff. This would help make it a day event not just a game event.

Next thought which most will argue against - raise ticket prices some. If something is cheap or lots of free tickets are given away, then it makes it seem to have less value. In return - drop concession prices. People will pay to get in if they think they will be treated well once there. Make it so they don’t feel like they will go broke on sodas and hot dogs.

Over summer, do whatever it takes to get some form of bathroom access and food access in the upper levels. With the bowl win, there will be new people coming to try a game, but if they have a bad experience in the upper level, they will not come back.

It’s bad enough we have the smallest fanbase in P4, then you want to make it less affordable?

Also, people hate traffic… And LA & Houston are 2 of the worst cities for traffic.
