That’s fair, but you are not the target audience for growing the football fan base. You already buy tickets and basketball is a very different situation.
Telling people to come try a game because it is a cheap azz event and then gouge them on concessions and they will not come back. simple.
Attendance will fix itself, everyone forgets the Colorado and Tech games that averaged 40k. We saw an attendance average increase of 5k year over year. Like many said, Houston is an event based city, a lot of our casual fans will attend 2-3 games a year this year the Tech and Colorado games were those game, they were just more desirable games. Next year there are no real tent pole games so the attendance should be more spread out.
I will call it now, I expect us to break 35k average next season with a 8-4 season or higher.
IMO the STUDENTS are the 'target audience for growing the football fan base". When I was a student, the administration totally whiffed this one. Because of the Astrodome, the UH administration didn’t give a damn whether students showed up for games or not. Worse yet- it showed. I still think UH is paying for its indifference toward its students and its fan base. I would say that is a 30 year hole in our continuity as far as fans are concerned.
We have done things the last few years that will make a big difference for us eventually: Campus Housing has increased, and on Campus stadium has been built, Campus life is slowly becoming more like campus life at other schools. UH WILL get there!
If games are ‘cool’ and FUN people will come.
I heard the same thing since the since 2010 and nothing has changed other than getting a new stadium.
Indoor vs outdoor.
Students are AN audience for growing the fan base, yes.
They are not the audience to build off of the Texas Bowl win. Agree with what you said about the students and that needs to change, but it is the type of change that builds over a decade(s) as they slowly graduate and then choose to come back for games. The Texas Bowl is a chance for an immediate impact from alums and non-associated fans in the city to be new ticket buyers next year.
We were close to 20k season tickets a few years back when there was a season ticket campaign so what the hell happened to everyone.
Accounts and tix are two different things… I have one account with 7 tix for 4 people…
So… I get all of their CP points.
You’re 100% right. That’s why I suggested the billboards! Pissing off ‘Tiger Nation’ would get us a ton of free national publicity!
If you don’t mind my saying so- CDH. We’d have to go back to Herman to rekindle that amount of interest
Yeah… he really pissed off a lot of people that last season…
People want things to just magically change over night but the truth is they’re just gonna gradually get better. Attendance moved up 4k this year which is probably in the top 15 or so for increase in attendance. Next year we’ll probably be around 35k. In a few years hopefully we’re hitting 40k. Sometimes you just have to have patience.
Sometimes yes. But UCLA people are weird. They are not so much avid fans for football as basketball. Their football fans come to games late and tend to leave early and they sorta act like its a huge cocktail party. e.g. don’t get seats low down by the aisles-they mill around talking and hardly watch the game. BUT UCLA people get pissed if they lose in basketball…LOL!
Similar to UNC…
Actually, many UNC fans told me they had NEVER seen a football game at UNC with as much hype & energy as the opener this year against TCU.
On campus student housing will make a difference for us. The more improvements and building we do at, and around, the campus the more things will change for the good.
Say we do have 5000 accounts with 3 to 4 tickets each, it would only mean 15k to 20k counted in attendance.
Then add in the 8k students then we fill up at least 25,000.
We need to find the remaining 15,000 seats to be filled whether it be 3,000 more season tickets accounts buying 2-3 seats.
If we turned TDECU into a dome, closed with AC,
Would that fix attendance?
We had attendance problems at the Astrodome and the 2013 season at NRG lol.
Heck even we had attendance threads for Fertitta Center the past few years.
