The WVU was a Thursday night game. So I can see why the attendance was low
It was. But that was a response to a post that said that it was full.
By 2nd quarter, most seats filled for both games…our fans take forever to sit down.

that’s unrealistic for the opener with unlv, a new coach and the show me something fanbase but if the coogs have a good showing at OU and blow out rice, could build. Iowa state is going to be hard but if the coogs get on a roll then utah, k state and baylor got real potential, utah and k state should come in ranked and the first visit by baylor.
I was at the game. The upper deck was mostly empty throughout the game, except for scattered bunches.
Traffic ain’t no joke
I want to see every old geezer who supported hiring grandpa Fritz over a younger coach in the stands this fall lol!
“Almost half of the students at the University of Houston last year were first-generation college students”. https://www.wsj.com/lifestyle/careers/public-college-value-salary-career-7dc157e5?st=tj98rhiizu2xk3r&reflink=article_imessage_share
When I saw this, I thought it might be a repost of a Yahoo Chat room post back in the early 1990s.
UH attendance is predicated by UH alumni interest UH Sports. It is not an alum’s responsibility to get attached to the college sports scene. It’s the university’s responsibility to draw the alumni into the sports scene and keep them engaged.
I think UH has worked really hard over to make this happenover the last 30 years (through academics, money, facilities, etc.)
Kelvin Sampson has shown us the way to do this in basketball. Football is the same path. Make the team relevant every year. Get into a bowl every year. The start of March Madness is the bowl games in college football.
Maybe make the college bowl games count for something more. Example:
• Playing in and winning a bowl game can be factored into a final ranking for the year. This could be used to give the conference a boost in ratings.
CWF has to win just like CKS has won in basketball. Do that and people will show up.
Again, UH’s issues are not isolated; pretty much every major college sports program (especially football) located in major metro areas have a hard time drawing fans on a consistent basis. Heck, I recall watching a UNC football game and someone pointing out how empty the stadium was.
Also, I will say it again: changing demographics of college students have a lot to do with this. If you look at major universities, there is an increasing number of international students, women and POCs (especially Asian students). These groups are not particularly used to playing sports at the level the US historically does. I don’t think that it is a coincidence that the SEC and BIG have fewer attendance issues for football. Besides the fact that their colleges are located in states without major pro sports, these campus are way more “White” than many of the colleges on the West Coast and Northeast, or in Houston.
Finally, this seems to be a football issue; many of these schools have less of an issue getting fans to watch other sports. I think that part of the issue is that many college fans know that no matter how good their school is, if they are not one of the ESPN chosen football schools, their schools have almost no chance of playing for a championship. That is not the issue in basketball; anyone has a realistic chance of winning a title. I mean UConn is Big East and just won back to back. The last four winners are not big time football programs.
I wonder if the expanded playoff system will positively impact this? I know that at MiamiU, people are very excited about the season as they actually have a legitimate shot at a CFP spot.
“I’ll go when they get they get the palm trees back.”
Single game tickets for UH at TCU are available for as little as $50 each. To buy TX Tech tickets, you have to buy season tickets at this point. UCF family weekend tickets are in demand. Opening game vs. LIU is not in demand.
Damn, off season
What? No way! Its the lack of traditional students! Or lack of freshman dorm mandates!
We used to make fun of this issue by having threads of reason why we could not make it to the game. The bottom line is that we have alumni that do not care about UH sports and many don’t care about UH at all. Student participation is getting better, but we just need alumni to care for once and show up. Even when we win, many have historically not shown up. I don’t have the answer, but it all comes down to folks caring about their school.
You mean the only barometer is football attendance?
Look at me. Started this untold number of the dead horse version.
Our average core is about 20,000 fans.
I read this chart as showing a correlation between wins and attendance. Every winning season shows an increase in attendance the next season. Then we hit a dry spell for a season or so and attendance drops.
Wasn’t 1976 and 2023 the first years in the SWC and Big 12? So those are exceptions to that trend.
