On this day in 1864, entrepreneur Florence Thornton Butt was born in Buena Vista, Mississippi. After moving to Kerrville with her family in 1905, she opened a grocery store that her son Howard would later expand to become H-E-B.

HEB started selling beer & wine when they heard I had moved to Texas. 1976
I had never heard of the place until I moved to Victoria in 82. Some people were still upset over the change. All I could think of to say was how could any store survive without alcohol sales?
