If ESPN wants BYU in the AAC they will come.
pearland, maybe not. Regarding exposure, they have a sweet deal. For BYU, it is all part of mission outreach.
Under the new regular-season media rights agreement, ESPN will continue to televise nationally a minimum of four BYU home football games each season. A minimum of three games will be carried on ABC, ESPN or ESPN2, while additional games can air on the three same networks or ESPNU. As part of the agreement, at least one game each season will be carried live on BYUtv. All games will be available to stream on the ESPN App.
Do we draw squat for Tulsa, Tulane and ECU? Yes.
DID we draw well for UCLA, Tech, Oklahoma State, Oklahoma, Oregon, Miami, BYU, TCU? Yes.
Apples Oranges
You can’t point to attendance of the former only, especially when the argument is what would draw against the latter when it’s the latter we’re talking about.
The crowd in Atlanta was pretty darn impressive if you ask me.
We’re not talking apples. We’re talking oranges and I believe the networks know that.
Do you think the Cougar faithful would turn out against LSU? Arkansas? Notre Dame? Michigan? Alabama? Those games would easier sell out NRG. We have the numbers when we have the product.
As what was said recently by A&M HC…“be careful what you wish for”. Sometimes it’s ok if you don’t have dessert after every meal.
So, take your crumbs, be grateful and shut up? We made a presentation to the Big XII. Maybe we would have been invited, maybe not. But, they enticed the Big XII not to expand. Assuming we would have been invited, that means we have lost potentially $135M over the last five years. If not us, some other school has lost a potential $135M
They are killing college sports by building super conferences, either explicitly or implicitly. Whether they took an active part or a passive part, I believe they were at least in the proverbial room when all of this Big XII/SEC realignments went down. They don’t care about conferences, they care about making money. Fine, but that doesn’t mean they get to take the high moral ground.
So no, I don’t have a problem calling them a rodent.
Fox is for super conferences too. They are hoping that ACC GOR is not as strong as it seems so they can keep growing their super conference. They would love to control 2 P5s with 32 teams coast to coast. Just as good as their NFL contract.
All these networks are trying to do what is best to make money. You guys get salty about ESPN because they are the best at it. That is what America is about. At least ESPN has invested in the lower half of college football or our program might have shut down by now. We could be sitting on a million dollar a year deal with games on Facebook and Twitch, you want that?
I’m with Pearland. B12 won’t survived. AAC schools will not go to B12 without ESPN blessing. ESPN want total control of AAC/B12 schools so only way that would work is 3-5 B12 schools merge with AAC. Fox still own the right to current B12. B12 can give ESPN hell now but by 2025, they will get pennies on a dollar from ESPN. FOX has no interested as they already have B10 and PAC12.
For our sake, I don’t want to worry about B12 adding AAC schools but not us. By adding B12 schools, we get to pick who we want. That mean leave BU to rotten in hell if necessary. So for me, either PAC 12 or AAC with 3-5 new schools. B12 is a dead man walking conference.
during the last expansion talk a few years back, Fox wanted the East Coast schools in the Big 12. Will they have any say in this ??
You’re making my point. Take what we give you, be grateful and be quiet.
Collegiate sports are not professional sports, yet. ESPN is the 800 lb gorilla in the room. They have contracts with all the major sports and the NCAA. As long as they’re just televising sports, I don’t have a problem with it. But they are manipulating the market place, i.e, conference realignments, that’s different. How would you like it if FOX came along and said “Texans, you stink, we’re creating a minor league and you’re being relegated. Oh, and you’re going to be getting 1/4 of the money you’ve been receiving from the TV contract.” That’s what is being done with these conference realignments. The Big XII is being relegated. We should be happy with our $7M and grateful that we’re getting weekday and 11:00 AM kickoffs in the scorching heat at the whims of a network. The school has no say in that anymore.
This impacts a lot more than sports as we’re talking about the universities as a whole. If UH receives an extra $27M a year, that’s $27M that the university doesn’t have to subsidize the athletic department and can use those funds for other things. Maybe assist us in attaining AAU status a little bit quicker
Furthermore, local and tax revenues are impacted as well. Had UH been invited into the Big XII, our attendance would have increased by our fans and fans from the visiting schools. That’s adding $$$ to local hotels, restaurants, and other businesses. So no, this doesn’t just occur in a vacuum.
The big 12 might not take UH if the expand. Baylor, okie state,Texas tech,Iowa state amd Kansas state do not want UH in the big 12. The goal is to make AAC stronger and kill the Big 12
Bingo!
No body is saying be quiet, its the opposite. Keep pushing for inclusion, keep improving the program, keep improving the university. ESPN can’t pay every school in FBS $30 million a year and make a profit, we aren’t some special case of a school getting screwed or something. Take off the Coog colored glasses for a second and really evaluate our current value, its probably only a little more than what we are currently getting paid. They are choosing the investments that make the most sense. It is up to us to be in a position to take advantage of that and get in one of those MANY positions where schools are being paid well above their market value. Right now, ESPN is trying to over value the AAC to destroy the Big 12. It might finally be our turn to get overpaid our worth. I’m cheering for ESPN to win right now because that would mean UH wins.
That’s cool if you want to get mad at ESPN. Just make sure you are mad at FOX as well. They could push to have us in the Big 10 or PAC, they wont at all. Get mad at all the other networks for not bidding more to get the AAC originally and get mad at them for not stepping in to save the Big 12 with invites to UH and other AAC schools.
I believe it’s the case , based on viewership numbers only, that UH is getting underpaid in
the AAC by about 40-60% or more. It’s hard to evaluate a teams worth based on market size or other factors like butts in the seat, etc. Just as likely, the dogs of the AAC are getting paid way more then they should be getting in the AAC. The Irate8 are just learning they are only worth much less. Their viewership numbers are pathetic. And even viewership numbers are tricky to use
if you happen to be playing a name or blue blood program or in a bowl.
That was never the point. The rodent is the one paying what he thinks is fair. I have no problem with that. The problem that I have is that the utau pimp clearly pimps the rodent so his turf can be protected to do what ever racketerring he wants. You put pressure to control recruiting in our area? Screw you with my and your tax Dollars. The utau pimp should not be collecting one penny from the very same area that he pimps already. How much $M’s would that be? I have no idea but the behemoth that is the utau pimp means he has to pay his personal and lackeys. You can’t have it both ways. That is what the utau pimp is getting away with.
When was the last time that the utau pimp was audited? Never maybe? It stinks to high heaven in Austin.
It is your problem if you do not see what college football is quickly becoming. You want it that way? Go ahead and enjoy it. I can assure you the way this is going we won’t have a football program within ten years. Tilman can’t keep forking over money. Why do you assume that he has an infinite atm machine? By saying yes to the rodent and please I will have an another you are justifying what we are witnessing.
You like us playing AA football?
You are content playing minor league?
You could care less what our futre looks like if we do not get into a P conference or remain in the AAC?
This is exactly what is at stake. There are no ways to put it. We play FBS Div I just like the utau pimp does. Why should he have a chance to get to the top and we can never get there?
Are you just going to lay down and just accept it? You have a choice. I can tell you and my feelings reflect many people that love college football. If this keeps going in the direction that it does college football is dead for good. Demographics already point in that direction.
I agree, my “little bit” meant a few million. I think 10-12 million makes sense. No where near $30 million just like the leftover 8 aren’t worth that. If we got bumped to $15 million or more because ESPN wants to kill the Big 12, then we are clear winners. Maybe a new contract with the Big 12 leftovers with us and a couple other AAC teams can get 12-15. Not sure, but of course we could get left out of that too if they think BYU/UCF/Cincy are more valuable.
The problem the tiny 8 think they are worth P5 money. Going to the AAC to them is going down.
I think people need to calm down and stop worrying about stuff we don’t know anything about; like what will actually happen, when it will happen, and who will it involve. Too mush hysteria going on.
Agree. Likely 10-12 million, a guaranteed big bowl, and security. Take that or take a big chance. It’s clear that ESPN is no longer interested in the Big 12, and it’s just as probable that Fox isn’t either.
I’ve been of this opinion for a while. You don’t take two in this chaotic environment. Why would you???
It doesn’t do anything for your conference in the short term. And if they lose two more you become the laughing stock of the nation.
I suspect if they raid it will be 4. Not sure BYU needs the B12 unless they lose access to the playoff.
(Note: they could take 4 from the AAC and not us.)
Taking four doesn’t really affect the competitive balance of the conference. The remaining teams range from pretty good to pretty bad. That’s normal. They can add any four and over time the results would be the same, except for getting creamed by OU.
