What if;
The poll shifting theory is correct and every 15,000 years the polls shift causing a complete destruction of society and 98-99% of the population is killed.
BUT
The top 1% sit out the destruction in an orbiting space station. Once the earth settles down and it is habitable again, the elites (the Gods from the stars) come down and help the remaining offspring of the survivors and their offspring restart society,
They keep the Gods from the stars illusion for two reasons 1) they don’t want the survivors to know they F’d over the survivors parents by safely sitting out the destruction in an orbiting space station and 2) they don’t want society to know that in regular cycles the polls shift and everything you build is destroyed. That is bad for moral.
So they are Us from a prior poll shifting epoc who are technologically advanced and have always been around. They aren’t us from the future they are us from the past.
After the big Chinese spy balloon incident, I had an idea for a novel about a Soviet balloon program in the 40’s, similar to our own, that was manned due to inferior autopilot technology. Mikhail and Ivan would suffer a pressurization failure over New Mexico resulting in some discoloration and disfigurement, and the “coverup” actually is set up to hide the fact of the Soviet program and our compromise of it (methods and sources). The rest is their exploits as guests of the USAF.

There were 3 “vagrants” picked up after the Kennedy assassination. One was Charles Harrelson who was convicted for assasinating a Federal Judge in San Antonio.
The other 2 were rumored to be Frank Sturgis and Howard Hunt. 10 years later their names reappeared during Watergate.
Oh yeah, Harrelson is Woody’s dad
