I won’t go into details because there is a lot, and it was told to me by a former player. But long story short, I heard he wasn’t an easy guy to play for. Like at all. Picked favorites a lot, let some players get away with crazy things on and off the field. Then other players he wouldn’t even know their names lol.
More common than you think, but as far as the other things yeah I can see these being major problems
He had a lot of downfalls but we still won more often than not which is what matters at the end.
Every coach has it’s skeletons i’m afraid so just that others are more careful about it.
Dude this is the case at every employer I have ever worked for. Closers get the money and the girls, second place gets a set of steak knives and third place gets fired.
The players that I spoke with, liked playing for him.
Tom Herman was ISU’s offensive coordinator from 2009 to 2011. He did very well with very little talent, even by all-time iowa state low standards.
As a person, he was pretty much the same that he was later on, when he became famous for the over-the-top lightning rod antics.
He famously said coaching in Ames is like being sent to Siberia, very much implying that it is comparatively similar to being sentenced to a Soviet Gulag lol. He was never one to shy away from bad optics, in practice and the media.
At the same time, overall I think most close to the program appreciated he was genuine and unfiltered in a refreshing way in his time here. And i think casual fans saw that he was a talented up-and-comer who could find ways to move the dang ball with noticeable ease!
Tom Herman got out of Ames as fast as he could, which was pretty typical of assistant stints here pre-Campbell. Always wished him well, but yeah he is always going to be kind of his own worst enemy. Like a Lane Kiffin-light effect. He is a good ball coach tho, never had a doubt about that! His players always spoke highly of him too.
FIFY.
I hate Herman as much as the next guy but to say “he” got QB’s injured in four different years is BS.
10-4. But that might work in corporate world. Not in college sports. Those guys who haven’t produced yet, often times are your future. Can’t have a “what are you doing for me lately” mindset as a coach in this era. You will be adding 40 transfers a class trying to hit your roster numbers. To build something sustainable you have to treat everybody the same, doesn’t mean you coach every kid the same, but the standards can’t change. You start moving the goal post for certain players and that’s how you find yourself going from Winning the peach bowl > Texas is Back > Getting fired after 2 years at FAU
I think it’s just seen as incredibly immature behavior you wouldn’t expect someone like him (at the time the hottest name in Coaching, MENSA member, etc.) to engage in.
I remember still being in college (and very immature myself) and thinking how ridiculous he looked doing that…just a bad look, on National TV and i believe it was the first time CFP kinda went “Hmm…something is not right with this one”
Spill the tea bro!
That was the deal. Oliver’s parents wanted both of their sons to play at same school.
He signed under Herman, but was recruited by Levine.
Herman recruited very few players for UH and the ones he did in his second year went with him to ut.
Carnival Barker !!
As someone said many years ago, Herman just caught lightning in a bottle for his first season and half of the second season.
History has proved thus !!
Physical practices also was an issue - ended many careers cause of it
It’s a well known fact
Kendra Scott…
His wife is hot
He wouldn’t let walkons use the weight room. When it was lightning instead of coming in they would just move to the fat end of the field.
I was talking more about how he treated his own players than how he was treated. However, with that said, I am sure UH would have bent over backwards for a 10-4 CTH, I mean, look at how we treated mediocre CDH?
