Tom Herman- a cautionary tale

Out of Sumlin, Herman, and Briles.
I think Briles can win with whoever is at QB.

We all know Keenum and Manziel carried Sumlin.

Exactly! We took a chance on him and he has stayed loyal because of it.

Art was in a tough place at Baylor, having to turn around a losing program in the B12, he brought in some questionable recruits and it was his downfall. At UH it was clear sailing, things were clicking on all cylinders. He loved UH and Yeoman. He knew every HS coach and could get the best recruits to come to UH, if we would have been B12, I think he would have stayed.

By the by I emailed with a local sports writer when Sumlin was at U. of Arizona.

The writer said that Athletic Dept officials had already discovered Sumlin’s strong drinking problems. Indeed he was then allowed to run a tab at a Bar owned by a Booster. No duh, huh?

Sumlin lasted 3 seasons in Tucson. Got his buyout. Already had his A&M buyout.

Briles had the best prospects for long term success at UH.

So
we hire a "fill in the blank name " coach who is so ambitious to win and make UH great immediately because he wants to use us a stepping stone.

In return, that coach elevates us to new heights, puts us on the National map, and creates a ton of excitement and energy locally.

People actually see a problem with that formula?

The problem is Fertitta didn’t start looking for the possible "next Herman " the day we hired him.

He leaves
we pivot to the next “win at all cost” coach.

Instead, we were caught with our pants down and had to settle for Applesauce

We were still in the AAC anyways, can’t blame the administration for that.

I’m not sure about that. He had 100% buy in. He wasn’t exposed as a fraud until he left and tried to recreate that culture at Texas and people saw through him.

I’m 100% confident that Herman built a house of cards. You can’t promise what he promised and not have it fall apart.

He had a great recruiting class coming in that he took to UT with him. We have no idea how it would have turned out. Who knows? IF he was really focused on UH, I believe it could have been something special here.

Herman’s recruiting his final year at UT fell off a cliff. He lost Ewers and the Brockermeyer twins in recruiting. The Brockermeyer twins’ dad was an All American at UT and their brother was on UT’s roster. That ought to tell you how Herman and his culture were perceived by high level recruits.

Ah, yeah, it’s not like Khator hired his son and son-in-law the second it became feasible to do so after the scandal.

While I liked Art Briles as an offensive football coach, he did seem to have a character flaw in hindsight.

Based on what, exactly?

Defense?

His ability to judge and find good QB’s We might not have been great on defense but the way his offense scored the Monceaux one score per quarter defense is plenty good enough to win games.

He never had a good defense at UH. He was never given an adequate budget for a coaching staff (IMHO) as the university couldn’t afford it at the time ??

His flaw was character
. See BU !!

Great production value. Thanks for sharing.

Why is this just coming out now? Didn’t he get there in 2023?

Even in the first minute the red flags are going off. The Fire is gone, he is talking about picking FAU for his wife
