Tom Herman- a cautionary tale

One event has always stuck with me during the H era. He was made the grand marshal of the livestock show and rodeo parade. At that time, he could do no wrong in H town. He really acted the part-all he needed was a totally white horse, armor, and a following of surfs. I thought then–they come and they go. Far as I know, he hasn’t been in parade since. --and no white horse.

Tune & Dell…

He turned USC down to stay at UH…

Sampson built something sustainable under him. Herman did not.

HUGE difference and not remotely similar in any respect.

Herman knew Charlie Strong was in trouble at Texas and knew if he could keep the momentum going at Houston, he would be a candidate for the Texas job. It is my belief that Herman’s plan all along was to use UH as a stepping stone. Knowing how things turned out, if you go back and listen to Herman’s interviews while he was UH coach, his commitment to UH was certainly disingenuous.

Herman interviewed for the South Carolina gig during his 6th month here!

Who gives a sh** , really?

Yeah Sampson was patient. Of course some of that was due to the fact that no one else would give Sampson a job so he had to be patient. Herman did not. However Herman should have looked at what happened to Strong, Kiffin, Rodriguez and Sumlin. As they say, he took away the wrong lessons.

In that era coaches used mid majors for P5 all the time so what was expected at the end of the day? We lost the 2 previous coaches (minus Lavigne) to P5 so why we acted that wasn’t going to happen?

In 2008, the NCAA issued a 5 year “show cause” order against Sampson, making him virtually unhireable to any NCAA school. Sampson was hired by UH in 2014, shortly after the show cause was lifted. I still thank my lucky stars UH hired him.

I mean LSU fired Miles in 2016 so he would have went there instead if the UT job didn’t open.

This is exactly what I’ve heard.

Of all the 3 coaches below, which one do you think would have more success if they spent at least 10 years at UH?

Briles
Herman
Sumlin

I remember Dane Roy (on his podcast) saying CTH called him by his actual name one time instead of just “Punter”. Said he realized it immediately and went back to Punter.

No doubt Briles, Yeoman protege and tons of in state connections and and offensive genius.

I think you have them listed about right. I would say Briles and Sumlin are close, and there is a wide gap between 2 and 3.

Nobody’s holding a gun to your head, forcing you to read the topic.

Sumlin was/is self destructive. Didn’t matter where Summie was, he was going to implode

Briles could have built something big at UH but who’s to say he wouldn’t have invited the same problems into UH that he did at Baylor?

Briles would not have gotten away at UH what he did at Baylor because of two people: Dave Maggard and Renu Khator.

Sure, who can really say for sure. Herman’s shtick would have worn thin after a while like it did at UT.
I agree that Briles had it set up to have a long run at UH. But our pitiful lack of resources would created a ceiling for him here, unless the success he achieved would have resulted in our moving up in class.
