I love the hypocrisy of pushing the NIT as a great season
but when Sampson took over when we had Numeorus recent NIT
but Sampson “took us from the pits" he turned over a horrible program

The blatant hyprocrisy is crazy

Struggling in the manner that we were no longer even getting the top players in Houston.
Rob was a pivotal recruit and when Texas entered the picture it became even more critical.
We were not a national power by any stretch.
I guarantee that to keep him locally we paid dearly. After we became the place to be especially among local kids.
Rob turned our program around

Yup.

Of course. Thanks.

Yes, you are proving that point.

Guy V Lewis never had the program in the place where Sampson took it over

They made the tourney in
70-71
71-72
72-73
This when only 22 teams made the tourney.

They missed the tourney in
73-74 (17-9 record)
74-75 (16-10)
75-76 (17-11)

Missed it again in 76-77 but as I mentioned they went 29-8,
13-3 in the SWC, and lost to the Hogs in the SWC Final. Only 32 teams made the ncaa tournament during this time frame. Making the NIT Final wasn’t what it is today because the ncaa tourney again only had 32 teams back then (not SIXTY-FOUR).

Made the tournament in 77-78
Missed the tourney in 78-79

So were they making deep runs in the ncaa tournament every season? No but making the ncaa tournament was WAY harder to do back then and to descirbe the program as “struggling badly” is utter nonsense. Did they have some issues of course. Pesik also said the program was struggling for a decade before Rob got there and funny how he showed their record starting from 73-74 but leaves out 70-71, 71-72, and 72-73.

Did the program take a dip after the late 60s with Big E (of course). But again pesik always trying.to talk about context but chooses not to take his own advice when looking at the decade before Rob got to UH and how it was WAY harder to make the ncaa tourney during this time frame. And I only go back to 1970 because pesik specifically said a decade.

Half of the 70s only twenty-two teams made the tourney and UH made it three times. No way that’s"struggling badly" and they should’ve went to the tourney in Birdsong’s SR season instead of the NIT.

So again pesik you are WRONG but will never admit and you’ll reply back to this with a bunch of BS.

We can agree to disagree

But again why are you only reflecting on the 1979 and not the modern era

  • yes, there were fewer tourney spots but far fewer teams competing for them. Only about ~230 team vs ~380 today

  • SWC was a power conference, in an era where there were only 52 teams that were considered power conference teams (conferences that dominated the atlarges)
 our NIT were in C-USA, a mid-major
qualifying for the NIT from C-USA is debateably a bigger accomplishment that qualifying for the NIT from the SWC even with the increased invites

I’m not debating what you consider struggling, that’s an opinion term
I’m saying have that metric be equal throughout

Again let’s agree to disagree
the players from their own mouth, documented in a ESPN documentary, have said my point
so I don’t need to defend it
and you are free to disagree

“Struggling badly”? That is hardly accurate.

@pesik I don’t know how old you are, but I’m guessing you weren’t around for the late 70’s.

Actually, we “struggled” the most during Rob’s freshman season, the first .500 season since the mid-60’s. Rob was actually part of a very heralded recruiting class. He, Mean and David Bunce (a very underrated and talented 6-10 big man who would soon be buried behind the rotation of Olajuwon, Mean and Bryan Williams) were actually the “big time” recruiting class that opened the door for the Drexler, Young, Lynden Rose, Eric Davis, David Rose, Dan Bunce class that would become the core of the PSJ era.

Prior to Rob, the team consistently won about 20 games per season throughout the early/mid 70’s, with not one season at or below .500. When Rob arrived in '79, they had been to at least 4 NCAA tournaments in the previous 8 or 9 seasons. No Final Fours
true! But hardly “struggling badly”.

I realize there is a narrative (which you’re repeating) about the state of GVL’s program prior to Rob’s arrival. But it’s as misleading today as it was back then. Prior to Rob, the teams were consistently SOLID. Not great, but definitely not “struggling badly”.

“Let’s agree to disagree”.

This is your way of acknowledging you’re wrong (and you are wrong).

Damn, so watching a documentary doesn’t make someone an expert. We”ll agree to agree on this

Some of us didn’t have to wait for the doc. We were around and following passionately while it was happening. LOL

you are doing the same thing they are an anchoring on the term struggling badly

that is subjective
there are kansas fans stating kansas is struggling as a program right now as it the 1st time in 20 years they didnt advance in the tournament, and the 1st time they werent regular season champions in back to back years in nearly 30 years. they were still a tournament team . there is a bar that is opinion bases

my point was we averaged 20 wins a season before sampson came too

there is a hypocrisy that before sampson we were a terrible program
when we regularly made NIT and also averaged 20 wins a season
there is blantant hyporicsy in when we want to use the term “struggling”
ive asked this questin 6 times now, and not 1 response, did we struggle in the eras before sampson? were we a struggling program in the penders era
if you say we were struggling then, then id accept, thats your bar of struggling

Sorry, you’re just wrong on that point.

You can “disagree” all you want. But sometimes it’s just better to take the “L”, and move on.

no , its a “you wont answer my question despite repeatedly asking over and over, you wont admit you are wrong” "phi slamma jama player have better credibility on this than you, why am i debating a stranger on the intern about it "

answer the damn question!!!

Yes, I’m “anchoring” on your actually words. Silly of me, I guess.

No we weren’t. We probably averaged 15 wins per season in the 5 years before Kelvin arrived.

Just stop. Stop it.

did you just make up fake math?

it was 17 wins
if we just do the last 5 years
19 wins if we do the last 9

lying is fun

this is the strange part about this
the simple answer for this is

“we didnt struggle badly before sampson came”

me: “okay, i see where your bar is, thats not the bar i used”

no one is just willing to take the stance that “we didnt struggle badly before sampson”
 and wont accept the hypocrisy

Stop deflecting.

I don’t give 2 damns about your question, your perspective or what you’ve read or watched about UH basketball history. You’re obviously young and have an ego problem. And you’ve been wrong about almost everything you’ve said so far.

The team was not “struggling” before Rob came. It was, in FACT, consistently still among the best bball programs year-to-year in the South (minus Kentucky). They actually only “struggled” DURING Rob’s freshman season, in large part because they were playing their talented freshmen (Rob, Mean and David Bunce) so much.

We also did NOT average 20 wins before Sampson arrived.
