Times have changed but i know in the early 2000s teams definitely had assistsnts scouting the message boards for any off season chatter that might help that first game match up.

Hot take for our opposition:
We will try and put the round bouncy thingy into what I am told is a āhoopā that will score us 1, 2, or 3 points. We will also try and prevent you from scoring using some sort of ādefensiveā array. Should we be successful in our scoring and preventing of your scoringā¦
We will most likely be victorious. However should you be successful in scoring and preventing us from scoring you will most likely be victorious.

before the prevelance of the internet, i could definitely see itā¦ it would actually be geniusā¦ you have no game film, not everyones games is televisedā¦ there would be no one who knows their own teams weakness more than themselves, board talk is better than nothingā¦
but today it would make no sense

Prior to snap, Smith clinches his butt cheeks every time we run a counter-play up the middle.
Now opposing defenses will be instructed to stare at Smithās butt pre-snap.

Remember the 1 time a UH coach utilized the internet to make a decision, that worked out not so well
You are forgetting D1 programs have D1 coaches assigned to scout ahead the future games so pregame prep goes smoothly each week. I am pretty sure they use more sophistication than alumni message boards.

I promise you literally no team in the country cares about message boards nor uses them to scout
