Transfer Commits Devan Williams and Marquis Shoulders

I saw that these two Tulsa receivers are transferring to UH. Does anyone know much about them?

Shoulders is from Katy, neither played a whole bunch. Other player from Temple. Both young with just a little playing time last year.

So we kick out all of our receivers because they aren’t up to par. Then we go get backups from temple and Tulsa. I would love to see the plan.

I may be wrong but I don’t think the staff pushed any WRs out for lack of talent. I think it had more to do with their new role, whether it was seeing less balls thrown their way or becoming more of a blocker to set screens. Also, it’s possible Fritz just didn’t like their attitude.

I definitely would rather have Sam Brown.

Both were starters for Tulsa, and Williams was their second-leading receiver. Shoulders was injured in late September and missed most of the season.

They aren’t backups. Both were starters. Shoulders was injured in the fourth game and missed the rest of the season. We didn’t kick Matthew Golden off the team. He left for a big payday at UT. I don’t know what happened with Sam Brown.

Sam Brown, itty Henry, Joshua Cobbs, Bryan Henry, Darson Herman and mikal Harrison pilot. And according to the father of one of those players, it wasn’t all mutual on the player’s end. Another dad confirmed as well. Just saying, sounds like kids that wanted to be here had to leave to bring in receivers from a 4-8 Tulsa team that went 2-6 in the new American. Just seems like a weird plan.

Williams played his freshman year at Tulsa after a great HS career at Temple HS! not Temple u…
He is a good player. …Shoulders caught 16 passes including 5 TDs before he got hurt last year. average almost 19 yds a catch…ALSO a good player…

Responding to your post in order:

Are we sure Sam Brown is one of the guys pushed out? If so it was clearly not due to on field production. I thought the story was that he left because he was running 2nd string.

Itty Henry and Bryan Henry is the same person, a backup TE who didn’t play much. It’s possible the staff wanted a larger TE profile, but regardless this isn’t even a receiver.

Cobbs was a backup who had some missed opportunities when he played.

I have never even heard of Darson Herman and I’m 99.99999% this person was never on scholarship.

MHP’s father was pretty vague about his son’s departure as opposed to Compton’s father so it’s hard to say here.

As for the Tulsa kids (neither played for Temple): Shoulders got hurt in 5 games last year. In those 5 games he was Tulsa’s leading WR and was averaging a TD a game (5 in 5). He’s short, 5-9, with a high ypc. Think of an explosive slot WR.

The Williams kid had 400 yards receiving as a freshman. He’s 6-1, 6-2 so probably more of an outside guy. Tulsa was also a primarily rushing team with no QBs on the team breaking 60% completion rate.

Receiver depth chart might look something like this now:

X: Jonah Wilson, Ja’Ryan Wallace, Jayshon Ridgle (fr)
Z: Boogie Johnson, Devean Williams (Tulsa), Koby Young (fr)
Y: Joseph Manjack, Mekhi Mews, Marquis Shoulders (Tulsa)

Rumors are the coaches want one more. We just missed on the guy from NMST who just committed to Miss St.

So that’s pretty much the “plan”. We lost some talented guys in Golden, Brown, MHP and a depth option in Cobbs. Are we as talented? Seriously doubt it. I’m tired of the whole NIL debate so I’ll just say it was probably unrealistic to expect to replace them with star WRs.

That said Brown was the only “star” WR that we lost. We’ll see what we have in Wilson with a larger sample size and Boogie needs more consistency catching the ball. Mews and Shoulders should be able to easily replace Golden’s production.

I feel great about our starters and the fact that we have 3 guys now that can do major damage out of the slot. We’re pretty unproven on the outside and that’s where I’ll personally miss having Brown.

So how many games did Sam Brown win for UH last year?

Darson Herman? You’re complaining about losing a walk-on tight end who was buried on the depth chart when the starter returns and a 6-6, 260 force of nature with 30 receptions from Michigan State transferred in? The father was Mr. Compton, Logan’s dad. Logan is more of a receiving tight end, and the new staff wants bigger tight ends for blocking. I wasn’t happy about losing Pilot, but he was down on the depth chart and apparently having trouble adjusting to being a college receiver. Cobbs was a backup last year and would have been this year as well. He lacks speed. We’re fine at receiver. The starters should be Manjack, Johnson, and Wilson, a solid starting Big 12 group. Behind them are UGA transfer Mews, the starters from Tulsa, walk on Anthony Gangi, RS freshman Ja’Ryan Wallace, and two impressive freshmen, including a four-star.

Shoulders was WR1 for Tulsa before he got hurt. Hes small but he’s really quick and fast. Plus he is a TD machine. Got that tank Dell in him. 283 yards 5 TDs in 4 games is really good. He prob would have been a double digit TD guy. Great pickup.

William was a freshman and was 2nd in yards. He picked us over Oklahoma State who was just in the big12 championship….

I don’t know why some of yall love to remove context and just look at numbers lol.

He was bought and went to the highest bidder. Not us, but him

The Receivers we have and new ones coming in will make a good group. Brown was a problem, culture wise…He got into multiple fights with other players. He probably didnt like hearing that he better block on every play where he doesnt catch it, just like Herman told our receivers when he got here…and how do you catch 62 passes and only score 3 times? Brown needed a seeing eye dog to find the end zone, apparently. Our new WRs are going to be BETTER…Just watch…This coaching staff will demand it, and work, work, work them, to get it.

I can’t account for all of Brown’s blocking, but I think it’s unfair to say he didn’t block.

Big block on this play to allow Manjack to score–quick props from Manjack following the score.

He was our best receiver last year and helped us more than hurt us on the field. It’s not his fault Dana and at that staff coached the game.
