Transfer Portal 2025

The Sweet 16 is even a tall order.

2 big counter points … an overall point and players a point

overall point: the context of the convos with iowa state (and similarly with byu) is title contention… historic seasons… using otz track reocord of making bigger stars of untouted guys falls somewhat flat when with those stars he still hasnt got iowa st past the sweet 16… and upset by a lower seed most years, mostly in blowouts… clearly the formula isnt working for the bigger ambition

like i noted, Iowa state is still top 4 in my current big 12 standing … for you to finish top 4 someone is your guard rotation is almost certainly going to be required to exceed expectations as their is not 1 notable scorer on roster

my issue: iowa state has an AMAZING foundation to make a historic team next year … we are talking you pick up just 1 top 25 transfer and youd have been seen as a title contenders… the line between good and great was so little , to not pick up that little is disappointing

the players point - every guard on roster:

  • tamin- not a good shooter/ scorer
  • heise- career 8pts per player (in 5 year), avg shooter, low volume 35% career shooter (bad defender) - 5per last year
  • dominick nelson- statistically terrible shooter
  • mason williams - only 13pt per on a terrible low major team at just avg %s…
  • Jamarion Batemon - probably the best shooter… but do want to rely on #43 recruit
  • 2 sub 100 incoming recruits

not 1 guard on roster i think could score on elite defense

ps i like Nelson, im not saying he is a bad commit… he is a Mid Major POY, great defender… was more about team fit…

a 6’6 muscular PG

Yeah but they wont be relied to carry us. Pops, Milos, Tugler & Sharp will be the veterans & leaders of the group.

You like em’ muscular huh?

I kid. :grimacing:

If Milos comes back he certainly is a leader but the only way we make a big dent in the playoffs is by the 3 newcomers having a large input.

Iowa State needed a back up PG. Didnt get one. We needed needed a combo/slasher guard who could creste his own shot and play defense. Ideally, we’d like a legit 3 point shooter who could play passable defense. We needed one more interior big man at the least, with a preference of an athletic, springy big who can run the floor, play defense, and at least score put backs around the rim.

When you look at what some other programs are getting, and even some with more limited resources, the offseason is a massive disappointment. IMO our staffed erred on their targets and didnt have sufficient back up plans in place.

The NIL isn’t a good thing for our particular program. We don’t have BYU church money (by that I mean LDS allgiance and deep pockets) and we dont have Texas oil money. Maybe more importantly, the state is firmly against the idea of the NIL in the first place. It puts us in a tough spot going forward.

i dont even think you needed BYU or texas money

their are a ton of middling transfers that id have been so exited about had they gone to iowa state

grand canyon has a better transfer class… you cant even blame the state as iowa has a better transfer class; Bennett Stirtz, Brendan Hausen and Alvaro Folgueiras to ISU and iowa state is likely a preseason top 3 team with who is returning

the dissappoint for me is you didn’t need much, just 1 touted add… you pay tj like 4 mil a year… you could have found 1mil somewhere for a 25-65 ranked transfer and go for a title

Hey man, I appreciate many of your kind words and can vibe with your general concerns. That Ole Miss debacle was legit and I’m not gonna downplay that at all. It keeps me up at night.

On the flipside, it was a weird market year beyond just normal inflation. Collectives are trying to unload their dollars while they still can before the expected July 1st house settlement date (fingers crossed), and the bball transfer market was a big shiny splashy place you could do that on actual proven names.

At which time NIL collectives will transition to something remsembling more of an attached advertising agency for the athletic departments than a slush fund of donated money. It’s actually fascinating, complicated, and frustratingly upsetting all at once lol

If u listen to Blum in the link I shared, ISU went from feeling really good about our ability to compete financially for established transfers, and they were initially receiving a ton of positive feedback from agents on offers… to being basically 110% priced out of everyone over a period of 4 days and finding out they aren’t gonna be in the same stratosphere. They had to adjust and adapt once again, as the always do. Is it disappointing? Yes in a way. But it’s also kind of expected and I’m still grateful and optimistic in our ability to do it, overall.

Some of it is just lack of source money, let’s just be clear. But a lot of it was because they truly do prioritize rewarding guys like Lipsey, Momcilovic, and Jefferson who have earned it and invested themselves into the whole. Lots of programs punted on that to make a splash, ISU refuses to do that. It’s a values and long term thing. Whenever ISU adds a transfer, they add corresponding money to everyone else. It’s important for our high retention, morale, and loyalty our returners have for ISU.

Excellent and valid points. Also, being in Ag myself which is arguably our biggest source of booster wealth, it’s also an industry that has a high propensity to reinvest in debt leveraged capital. Google the price of farm land or modern equipment and tell me where the free available cash just laying around is lol.

Most of our wealthy farmers are credit rich. They can take out a loan that would make your head spin, any time any place. They can pull the plug and sell off assets at any point, and they can ride off into the sunset and live like a king whenever they see fit… But they can’t exactly take out a million dollar loan so we can give it to a backup point guard lol. There’s no box on a bank form for that, even in Iowa🤣, maybe there should be!
