Stirtz was following his coach and no team, let alone Iowa State, was prying him away. Both teams had different circumstances as Iowa was basically starting from scratch; no holdovers and no incoming recruiting class. McCollum likely had more available funds AND could âpromiseâ playing time that few teams could. Thatâs not a good compariosn.
With that said, I agree with the general premise that you ârepackagedâ from my earlier post: Iowa Stateâs portal haul was underwhelming. We didnt need âstar playersâ as much as we needed pieces. Youd think we could have landed a player like Thiam over a Cinci (as an example) or several other guys. Again, we didnât need the best big or point guard, but attainable guys that filled certain roles and holes from last yearâs team.
My comments in regard to money are valid. I have a feeling our NIL situation is paltry compared to many of our peers as culturally, the fan base, doesnât support paying players. As Pollard has shown, donors will give and give generously to projects and facilities but many, especially the old guard, have issues with college players making millions. We also dont have a mega donor that rivals Texas oil money, Ryan Smith, Fertitta, the LDS etc.
The above isnt an (absolute) excuse for the portal performance. I do think its an inhibitor, especially if our coaches miss on targets and have to pivot late.
If we (somehow) finish top 3 or 4 its going to be on the backs of our freshman recruits. But Otzâs track record there isnt very good.
