Did we truly try to not rebound at all back then? I don’t remember that if we did.
He’ll make Tulane better. Not conference championship better, but better. Their goal will be NIT invites. Good goal for them, but certainly challenging.
If I recall correctly, the goal was to take shots quickly and get steals, so I think we concentrated more on getting back on defense rather than getting rebounds.
He seems like an upgrade over Tim Jankovich at SMU.
He was a NBA head coach, that alone is an accomplishment. But was he very successful? Not really. I believe he had a losing record overall as a NBA coach but had a couple of very good seasons.

For the record, Tom Penders’ squads jacked up threes at relatively the same rate as Sampson’s teams have done. Tom’s teams didn’t rebound as well as Sampson’s and Tom’s final season we had Georgia State type rebounding numbers but most of the previous years we were middle of the pack being out rebounded 1 to 3 rebounds a game. So I don’t think Tom’s final season is a good measuring stick for his philosophy on rebounds. He didn’t have the talent and depth Sampson currently worked with so his squads crashing the boards would have resulted in many more easy transition buckets for the competition.
It was still ugly basketball. That weave dang near put me to sleep. But when we hit our shots and Aubrey coleman or Fluff would do their things, it was fun.
If he can do in Louisiana what he did in Georgia in terms of recruits he will do just fine.
Just to add on the rebounding I believe Tom only had one really good defensive squad the 2005 team? But for the rest the tenure the defenses were pretty bad. I’m not blaming him that definitely comes down to recruiting and depth like you said.
But this really does look like a solid hire for Tulane based on who was available. If he can recruit a little better no reason to think why they wouldn’t compete for post season tournaments.
The main thing keeping the AAC from being a better conference than the Big East right now is the bottom of the conference. The top AAC teams are better than the top Big East teams, but we have two terrible teams at the bottom while the Big East is still decent at the bottom. If Hunter can get Tulane to around a .500 record, suddenly everyone’s RPI/NET goes up a bit and our conference looks better.
Hunter is a bit of a BS artist. Good for recruiting not so good with colleagues.
He reminds me of a black version of the clown in Spawn.
Having a squad that can win the Sun Belt would still be a masssive improvement over most of Tulane’s basketball history.
What an odd situation.
a nice portion of his press conference was focused on houston…says he doesnt know if Tulane and houtson are rivals but to him they are his rivals
Good stuff, starting to like the guy now.
