One of the best things living in Washington is the Mike Leach coaches show on the radio.
Good article. Current Sun Belt commissioner and former WAC Commissioner Karl Benson was calling the BCS conferences a “cartel” all the way back in 1997 in front of congress.
“Someone needs to step forward and help us fix post season college football,” said Karl Benson in 1997.
Bueller?
Why not open it up to more teams making the playoff. If the goal is NCAA to make more $ then more games that actually mean something, (not bowls) will bring in more viewers. If players know they can have a path to a Championship then Alabama no longer has a monopoly on all the talent. The UCF story has to be appealing, especially since they just had the first one armed player go pro. UH would be compelling with the Big Ed story, and potential #1 draft picking G5(P6).
I think it’ll eventually go to 8; there’s just too much money sitting there for it not to and there are P5 conferences that will be tired of being left out. The debate will be whether to include a G5 rep or not. I believe in the end, there will be pressure to include that G5 rep to avoid Congressional intervention, maybe with a stipulation that the G5 team has to be ranked in the top 15 or top 20 to secure the spot.
Going to 8 will force teams to schedule tougher OOC games as well
For example, a Pac 12 could lose all their OOC, lose 1 or 2 conference games, and still win the Pac12 to get an autobid for the playoffs
If Stanford goes undefeated but loses the conference championship, they could still get a bid if they had really good OOC games
