UH All-Time Starting 5

At this point, Jamal Shead is my favorite player in the Sampson era.

It is always tough on these “best starting five” questions to select the best player at each position or the best positional chemistry. My approach is the best player at each position, period.

I’m not sure where my head was at to omit Don “Duck” Chaney. One of the best defensive guards in UH history. Excellent NBA player and head coach.

Without Birdsong it’s automatically invalid.

Question is who you leaving off… Sasser or $head?

$head is my PG.

I love Q, but Q only played 2 years at UH and his first year at UH would not have him in the conversation as best of the best. Birdsong was valuable as a true freshman and was 3rd leading team scorer. Birdsong led the team the next 3 years.

No doubt in my mind Birdsong starts. Great depth with Q coming off the bench.

I like Sams starters plus Ken Ciolli.

Chaney was the best defensive guard we have ever had here…so end of that story. Otis Birdsong was a great penetrator and Rob Williams would have been an excellent three point shooter in today’s game.
I will say this, my favorite Coog of this modern era remains Shead and he would be my first guy off the bench. And with his work ethic and leadership ability, he would be getting a whole lot of playing time lol…

$head… AAC Defensive POY, Big 12 Defensive POY, Naismith National Defensive POY…

You could argue $head is the best defensive guard ever to play at UH.

Honestly I think 4 are locks.

Hayes
Dream
Drexler
Birdsong
Shead because I trust him more than Rob. Character and Defense do still matter.

Now where it gets interesting is 2nd and 3rd teams.

Rob
Grimes
Young
Dwight Davis
Caillac

Still so many to be considered for the next team

Goldwire
Duck Chaney
Dunbar
Moore
Outlaw

Still many more for 4th

Sasser
Coleman
Mack
Upchurch
Micheaux

Others to fill more teams are and I know some can add more greats from the 60-70s……
Franklin
Anders
Winslow
D. Jones
McKiver
Spain
Reynolds
Lee
Cioli
Taylor
Gray
Jarreau
GRob
Owens
Herrera
Hollis
Gervin

I’m sure Birdsong was great. Having not seen him though, it’s hard to compare him taking 20+ shots a game to Grimes. I’m sticking with Q and his elite combination of 3pt shooting, defense, and rebounding. Doesn’t hurt that he led a mid-major to a F4.

Shame on you Coach @RWcoog for not including former Wheatley Wildcat and 1972 Olympian Dwight Jones.

No need to keep going back and fourth on one players. I listed over 30 and still
Missed some.

Oops but I can honestly say the last Davis I included was meant to be Jones. I get he and Dwight Davis mixed up and couldn’t recall the name

Fixed but probably needs to be higher. Y’all can debate.

UH has had an incredible number of high quality Basketball players.

It is easy to name the Top 3: Big E, Dream, Drexler.

You then can name 30 others and be right.

Controversy already. Birdsong was a better college player than Drexler.

Full disclosure. I do not know how to create a Coogfans poll. If someone knows how to do it please let me know how.
So let me ask you this. Which era was more exciting?

Thank you participating.

Phi Slama Jama was 40 years ago. How can you trust someone that votes that wasn’t born yet? Voting either for or against.

I saw both and I can’t choose one over the other.
