UH All-Time Starting 5

Who’s your all time starting UH squad?

For me, picking the 2 guard was a kinda of a toss up because Cryer is my favorite although Grimes is taller and peaked more than Sasser too. I have Grimes because of his 6’5" height and nba readiness. Birdsong was legendary too.

Here’s my Coog all time starting 5.

  1. Shead
  2. Grimes
  3. Drexler
  4. Hayes
  5. Dream

Who’s yours?

I probably would have Birdsong at the 2.

I don’t think you can debate 3-5.

Birdsong was amazing too and had better scoring stats than Grimes. Legend.

It’s not even a discussion between Birdsong + Grimes. Now if it’s about who you like more that’s a different story. Who the better player is. Birdsong.

I think there is a legitimate discussion over PG. Candidates are Rob Williams, Louis Dunbar, Reid Gettys and Jamal Shead. Galen Robinson just missed my cut.

I can make a case for any of them as #1. For mismatches and scoring, Sweet Lou. For scoring, and theatrics, Rob Williams. For running the offense, assists and FT shooting Reid Gettys. For leadership, defense and will to win, Jamal Shead.

You could pick any of these and I would be okay.

Are you considering Cadillac strictly as a center and not PF? If PF, he should be on the list

Grimes is the better defender, better 3pt shooter, and is taller. In a lineup full of scorers, Grimes would fit my team better than Birdsong, even though Birdsong is the superior basketball player.

Big E

Dream

Drexler

Birdsong

The fifth spot could go to many, many different players. UH has been blessed with an incredible amount of Basketball talent.

I think SamHouston has it about right.

Anyone who’s going with Grimes over Birdsong more then likely didn’t see Otis play.

No way Chaney and Birdsong aren’t the guards. Then there is Rob Williams, probably the most talented guard we ever had.

I’ve seen Birdsong play and he’s the superior overall player than Grimes hands down. But a team with Hakeem/Hayes requires open 3s and Birdsongs 25% 3pt percentage wouldn’t make my team.

The old heads are going to push their guys. Thats always been the case. I’m going to push for guys from this era. Otis can come off the bench.

There wasn’t a 3 point line when he played. Is this an NBA stat?

The NBA adopted the three-point line for the 1979-80 season.
Birdsong played in the NBA from 1977 to 1989.

Sorry but if you truly saw Birdsong play, you sure wouldn’t be bringing up 3 pt % in the NBA.

Birdsong knew how to get into the paint (and with his pull up J) and had a deadly mid range game. It was a different game back then, teams weren’t shooting 3’s the way they do now. You spouting off that he only shot 27% from three is laughable. Yep he didn’t even avg ONE 3 pt attempt per game his entire career (he avg .3 attempts per gm for his career).

Anyone that actually saw Birdsong play, knows that if was playing in todays game he’d be deadly from 3. He had great range and he wasn’t a gunner. Look at his career FG % for his career.

I know how Birdsong played. But with Shead, Drexler, Hayes, and Dream already running the floor, I don’t need Birdsong to go to the paint as much. I need a defender, someone with length, and can shoot the 3 in todays era. Birdsong isn’t a better 3pt shooter than Grimes, nor is he taller, or a better defender. I stick with my lineup.

You have to bring up 3’s in the context of the team you’re assembling. This isn’t a Grimes vs Birdsong who’s a better player. This is Grimes vs Birdsong who’s better for the role on your team. There is a difference.
