UH Board of Regents Discuss Housing Shasta VII on Campus

It’s a reddit post… so take is with a grain of salt.

Would be awesome to have Shasta back on campus though!

I never understood having a mascot at the zoo

This came from the Financial meeting if I’m correct. Same topic was posted in Satellite, I took some notes, posted it to Reddit

Its a fact

Strongly disagree with this. There is nowhere near the room for a real Cougar enclosure, and having him/her at the zoo draws attention to the university.

EDIT - I read the reddit post, I suppose if a bad ass enclosure was built near TDECU that could be cool I suppose.

I tend to agree with you. Im far from a PETA thumper but if big cats have to be in captivity, they need to have space to roam.

Im an animal in the wild kind of guy myself.

Party pooper. Most big cats sleep all day anyway

As I mentioned in the Satellite thread, there is a good amount of room to build a good sized enclosure on the land next to the Cougar Woods dining hall, across the street from Cougar Village Apartments. It’s on the corner of Cullen and Cougar Village Drive, right next to the stadium.

Whenever I’m at the zoo I always went to visit with Shasta. I think he should stay there, they just need a bigger sign promoting him as UH’s mascot. p.s. He said that he enjoyed seeing all the folks who stopped by. (take that with a grain of salt)

I’ve said this on other threads about the subject, but put me in the crowd firmly against this.

We can feed it a longhorn prior to the UT game.

I would love to have Shasta on campus and at the games provided:
He (she) has an abundant and roomy cage
He has adequate security. So much crime and vandalism in the city now if its not guarded and nailed down it will be stolen or defaced just for the hell of it.

Mountain lions belong in the wild the way God intended, not breathing in smog and pot smoke from dorm windows.

I can see how it might appeal to folks that were on campus back when we actually had a Cougar on campus, but at the same time, I could also see this going wrong…like what if the cougar gets loose on campus somehow or some goofball student/visitor enters the den and gets mauled?

We need Shasta on campus, Just in a great good zoo cage as if in a zoo. He’d have visitors just like the zoo and we don’t roam him around out of the cage for game days. Lsu has mike the tiger and he stays in his cage. I’m tired of us thinking we can’t do this or that when others do it being wusssies. We can do this and do it right and it will work.

I’m actually tired of us being wussies thinking gloom and doom all the time. We’re actually big time now and about to grab 4 pac schools. Our future has never been better than what’s going down now. We’re about to be in the best 3rd conf of 4.

If Tillman builds the cage and wants it it will be ok if if fundraise for it it’s gonna work. There won’t be our Coog walking around sedated like in the 80.s .

slightly unrelated topic, but have you guys seen Deep in The Heart? Planet Earth style documentary narrated by Matthew McConaughey. Very good, and definitely worth a watch. They touch a bit on Mountain Lions in Texas.

One Christmas when we were in Waco we literally visited Baylor just to see the bear. I like the idea but do we have room for a large enough enclosure.
