They had 1k students though.
Rice doesn’t have enough students and alums to have a big fan base. From Wikipedia:
Students 7,022 (Fall 2017)[5]
Undergraduates 4,001 (Fall 2017)[6]
Postgraduates 3,021 (Fall 2017)[6]
So, they actually had a pretty good turnout. I’m for playing them every year.

I am for playing Rice every year also but that should be the weakest game we accept on our schedule each year.
The ADs of both schools like that they can schedule an FBS opponent without incurring significant travel costs. Which is why this game will continue to be played.
