UH, Tilman Fertitta want to bring new $200M hospital to Harris County

Not football related but a move closer to AAU status.

The University of Houston’s medical school will ask the Texas legislature for $200 million to build a community hospital in Harris County — part of an ambitious goal to significantly grow the college and provide students with more training opportunities.

University leadership, including president Renu Khator and Board of Regents Chairman Tilman Fertitta, revealed the plans in a meeting Thursday with the Houston Chronicle Editorial Board.

It’s behind a paywall, but I think it’s a GREAT idea!!!

Any great medical school needs affiliated teaching hospitals. I hope that the legislature approves it.

I’m also excited to see the new biomedical research building that will supposedly be constructed soon.

We need a facility like that to bring in the research dollars necessary to compete for AAU membership.

GO TILMAN!!!

It’s football related because we’re going to send our opponents to this hospital.

I heard the same Must not have been the right situation or too expensive.

This is very exciting! Ben Taub and LBJ acute care facilities are training grounds for Baylor and UT Medical Schools and UH needs its own facility. This will benefit the community population and provide a training ground for young medical professionals.

Great news. But is a $200 million dollar hospital much of a hospital these days ?
No idea what state of the art hospitals go for these days. Article mentions 60-100 beds capacity. But you have to start somewhere. Leave plenty of space for Phase 2 and 3 additions in the future.

I did some general Googling, and found that our administration is about right on the cost.

Cant see it but is this in medical center or on campus?

The article said “East Harris County,” whatever that means.

There is another really big surplus this year so my bet is on Khator and Fertitta getting this money for the hospital.

Public universities and state agencies are competing this year for Texas’ $24 billion budget surplus – and as individual schools often ask for help funding multiple projects, it’s typical to see only a portion of their requests granted.

I believe they picked that region because there is no hospital between TMC and Pasadena. UH once again, wants to fill that void.

I think the hospital is going to be designed entirely around teaching and research as well, which could add to the extra cost.

I too, did hear about St. Joes, but it seems like there’s only a training agreement right now. This could be some pull to get the money for the individual hospital, which is both a county and University thing, which Tilman can help with, or just to get the money to buy St. Joes.

If the city does get involved, as much as I dislike Whitmire for reasons OTHER than the mandatory housing issue with UH, it does seem like Whitmire and Khator are holding hands for projects to improve the University.

The article says that UH is looking for a hospital system partner to run the hospital, and UH aligning with Harris Health makes sense. Harris Health’s mission is to serve the underserved population in Harris County and UH can tap into Harris Health’s Primary Care and Urgent Care facilities, for referral to UH’s hospital, and relieve some of the overcrowding at Ben Taub and LBJ. Have they announced whether the new hospital will be a Level 1 Trauma Center? Harris County only has two for the entire county, Ben Taub and Memorial Hermann Medical Center, which are right next to each other.

We should only recruit traditional patients
