UH to Retire Dwight Davis’ Number

I am very glad UH is retiring Double D’s number. He was a great player in the early 1970s. A product of HISD, Double D graduated from Houston Worthing and was drafted #3 overall in the NBA Draft. Davis is in UH’s Hall of Honor. I still see Davis at most UH games.

I love that Coach Sampson pushes to celebrate UH’s past.

Long overdue. The former Worthing star was one of our all time best players. Great shot blocker, one of the best ever at UH.
Anyone remember him blocking Artis Gilmore at the Hof?

This is wonderful news. DD is one of my all time favorite players. And his life story is inspiring. Can’t wait for the ceremony.

I was at the game as one of the “Taub Mob”. The day before the game all everybody talked about was Artis Gilmore coming to town. When Artis Gilmore played for the Spurs he lived in the same neighborhood and I got to talk with him several times. He was a true gentleman and was very complimentary when I told him I watched him at the Hof.

It’s heartening that he is being honored;

disheartening that it’s taken so long.

Jacksonville also had another 7-footer up front in Pembrooke Burrows. Those were fun times in the HOF.

I think my voice is still horse from screaming at that game.

UH has such a rich tradition in basketball. Thank you Guy V. Lewis and Kelvin Sampson. Thank you to the other coaches who represented UH, but may not have had the same success. You are part of the history too.

Do y’all remember (old guys) in the Regional game beteeen the Coogs and Whorns in 1972, the Coogs were losing and Dwight fouled out. Harry Larrabee came over and tried to shake his hand for zUT. Dwight would have nothing to do with Harry as he said Fucc You that the whole world caught on camera. Dwight was quite the player but that day UT got the best of UH. We also had Olympian Dwight Jones but if memory he did not have a good game.

DD was the only one really playing hard that game…the rest, including Dwight Jones stood around like we had the game in the bag. Davis was a gamer and that game really hurt…it hurt a lot of us…

Dad told me about our game with Jacksonville so many times and how Ollie Taylor went up against their twin towers and our rebounded them at times. I think DD may have been in early foul trouble.

If Guy V built the house, Sampson remodeled and added on.

DD was the best player on that 1972 team. The front line was all drafted by the NBA. Three of the players on that team were products of HISD. Hard to imagine that in this day and age.

F Dwight Davis (Houston Worthing); Drafted by the Cleveland Caveliers
C Dwight Jones (Houston Wheatley); Drafted by the Atlanta Hawks
F Steve Newsome (Columbia, Missouri); Drafted by the Chicago Bulls
G Donnell Hayes (Camden, NJ); Not drafted
G Jerry Bonney (Houston Wheatley); Not drafted

Dwight spoke in front of a large group of kids that were on campus prior to a UH football game several years ago. He gave an All-American performance. He was really nice.

Congratulations to him for this honor. About time. I had just assumed it was a done deal years ago.

Think I saw Bonny at the game tonight.

Bonney was one of the best defensive guards who played here. He was really good in the Guy V press…

That Las Cruces trip was a long one in my buddy’s Chrysler  It was my first out-of-state hoops roadie.
