UH-Victoria is closing its operations at the Katy campus

They just built it.

UH will still hold classes there, but UHV is pulling out.

I went ahead and changed the title of this string.

UH still uses the facility; it’s only UH-Victoria that’s bailing out. Unless things have changed, the top floor of that building houses UH’s four year “traditional” Bachelor of Science in Nursing program.

There’s no need for that many satellite campuses to begin with - thats a lot of additional infrastructure needed and you got to let any and everyone use it to justify revenue - just get them to the main campus - there’s enough colleges nearby for all we don’t have to hog everything

Why would you need a UHV campus in Houston in the first place? You guys railed about duplicate services when UT wanted to start a campus in Houston. This was the same thing. If you are a student in Katy/Houston, why on earth would you apply to UHV?

Valid question.

My only guess would be that if you can’t get into UH Main Campus, but you CAN get into UH-Victoria…then that would allow such a Houston area student to take that school’s classes closer to home.

But yeah, I agree. Not a lot of utility.

We got caught up in boosting enrollment a decade or so ago and the thought was growth was the fastest way to respectability but you gotta maintain growth and the issues with it

We tried to go all over houston but got push back from the northwest side - and we’re putting campuses in suburbs where most kids are going to college anyway so you gotta create JUCO partnerships

I have to imagine we aren’t facing the same enrollment issues now that we were 10 years ago…

I earned my undergraduate degree at UH’s main campus, and a master’s degree in Victoria where I lived for 30+ years. It never made sense to me why a branch in another city would have branch in another city. Why not University of Houston - Katy?

On a related note, I always thought it would be fun to have a degree at each of the UH campuses. But that’s too much work:

“I am no lazier now than I was forty years ago, but that is because I reached the limit forty years ago. You can’t go beyond possibility” (Twain).

no big deal, UHV just cant make the costs work there; its a good option for UH main, i took one course there for my minor, i suppose the prof lived around there and did not want to drive in to town

Who is on first?
Should the Katy campus be a UH campus? Other universities have satellite campuses away from the main/close city. Katy is not in Tegucigalpa it is close to Houston.

It’s at the corner of the I-10 and 99. That’s far from campus. Really far.

It seems like this expansion was the result of an agreement with UHV back when they were really pushing to exit the UH system and move into the A&M system.

From what I remember, UHV was pretty pissed about UH taking over their nursing program. The UH Katy location may have been a bone thrown to them to appease them.

Yeah, that sounds right. And the UH-V folks didn’t think the UH system was doing anything to help them grow and generally holding them back.

Victoria is like an hour away though.

I read this morning a State legislator has introduced a bill to move UH-Victoria from UH to Texas A&M. Apparently the mayor of Victoria supports the change. I haven’t seen UH’s response.

It’s the exact same thing that happened in 2014.
