USA Today: Expansion clock is ticking. Do Big Ten, SEC make final move?

Expansion clock is ticking. Do Big Ten, SEC make final move?

I think Houston, Tech, and even BYU could maybe make the jump if we had a couple more years. As it is I don’t think anyone from the big 12 is going anywhere

We all need a decade

Congress should just write in the legislation any moves of other school to different conference while the legislation is being formulatrd, will be retroactively be rollbacked.

I wish I was as optimistic as you are about Houston making the jump.

The ONLY reason we’re in the Big 12 right now is bc Tilman Fertitta had to make some deals & calls with TX politicians to toosh-push us in.

Not sure if Fertitta has the power to influence the SEC &/or Big 10 to do that again, because as a whole, our Athletics Dept. is not very enticing.

That’s why I’ve always said that a P2 breakaway is a nightmare scenario for us. Our brand is likely too small in terms of eyeballs and fan support to make a P2 invite realistic.

If the P2 breaks away…then our status as a “power” program is likely in jeopardy.

I wish they would breakaway so I could spend that $ & time on something else…

I won’t watch 1 minute of a P2 that doesn’t have UH in it and I can guarantee you there are millions of others that will do the same…

Texas politicians have NO say, pull, leverage, strings or cards to play — over Big XII as a conference as a whole or members not in Texas —in the matter whatsoever. There would be no reason to even listen to any proposed threat.

Though a dramatic story oozing with speculation, I’ve yet to hear one example of how any conversation like that would go.

Staying at 15? (Or any odd number) Very stupid!

Memphis over Houston? Over the top stupider.

Give me a break!

Overt inferiority complexes are a bad look.

So, you’re saying former TX Gov, Ann Richards, had no power/influence in keeping us out?

The only way I see the B1G or SEC interested in UH is if the media networks went to the conference and said “We can increase each school’s media revenue by $$$.” Unlikely.

I don’t see any movement until the media contracts come up for renewal. This is not about political pressure. This is purely about money.

Since all SWC schools were in Texas, in 1995, it was a wholly different deck of cards but I still doubt it. At least it was feasible to consider how a conversation would go and what cards could be played.

Not all Big XII schools answer to Texas politics.

They did though.

The Tx Big 12 schools originally didn’t want to take UH.

Abbott and Patrick put pressure on them to change their votes and approve our invite.

Had they voted no, which they planned to until pressured, we wouldn’t have had the 3/4 majority needed for an invite.

You can ask @monceaux if you don’t believe me on that.

The Texas schools did though. Abbott and Patrick made them change their mind.

In Tech’s case, state funding could be affected.

In Baylor and TCU’s case, money from state sponsored scholarships in Nursing and other fields could have been denied.

So yes, they do, AND DID answer to Texas politics/politicians.

This is true, chronicle had an article on it

God i am so SICK of hearing this…There IS no P2 and there wont be any breakaway…BIG has everything it wants and needs right now and they absolutely rule college FB and now BB too, this past year. What they WILL do is try to put themselves in a position to be as dominant over everyone as they can. We fought for years to get in the Big 12 and thats where we are!! Thats where our rivals are…Now line up and beat them. We arent going anywhere and we shouldnt WANT to go anywhere…Ours is a strong league…Focus on winning it, and then making noise in the playoffs.

IF they ever wanted to break away for a “Power 2” thing they would also have to cover any costs the NCAA currently pays. That covers athlete insurance, injury coverage, scholarships and other things.

That aint cheap, i doubt they break away to pay more and take on additional responsibility. Everything points to it not ever happening. The extra revenue would have to be extremely worthwhile and theyd have to be concrete that the gamble would payoff.

I agree and we should finally enjoy ourselves being in p4. There will not be a breakaway.
Some people can’t enjoy the moment and want to be a downer. Our conference is a good one and is currently 3rd best of the p4s. We’re in a good spot.

Have you all noticed who is pushing for a p2 and have done so for years?
Yes, the big10, sec and…primarily espn.
This equals to more money for them and a lot less mouths to feed for the other. This has nothing to do with sport, never has been but it is 100% about money.

Does the Big 12 have to send TECH to any playoff again? That Orange Bowl was embarrassing.

Big 12 needs to send Tech where ever our 3rd place team goes while Houston and BYU play for the championship.
