Ha. Only 10 yrs ago Mike. You were just a youngster then.
Yes, im pretty confident in that scenario. I remembered them fighting it out for Starting PG & playing time. In the end RJ said I’m out of here. He was like 2 yrs ahead of Galen in classification also.

Ronnie transferred here from Purdue. Then grad transferred to Auburn.

Ok thank you. Yea, didn’t look any of it up , was just going by memory but remembering him transferring out after Galen earned starting pg position.

As it stands now…

Galen > Pop

Galen was 10x better than what Pop is. Way more playmaking ability. Galen was a complete player.

Galen was a good player and great leader. Super important for the team success but prior to his senior year he was pretty limited offensively. I don’t really view the junior version of him (4.7 ppg with no reliable shot) as a complete player. Credit to him for working on his shot. He definitely brought more to the table as a scorer his senior year.

We’ll see what happens with Pop. I think we’re great a developing the areas that he’s struggled in (ball protection, shot selection, defense). I think he’s got a lot of natural ability and could really shine if he buys in to our culture. Could go south too though so let’s hope for the best case scenario.

Idk that I agree that Dejon had more expectations coming into his first season than Flemings has as a 5 star on the #1 team in the nation whose PG may enter the NBA draft…

100% did…Kingston is a 5star but a expected multi-year prospect not a 1and done …
His composite of 23 is only like 8 spots higher than Terrance
Most of our fan base don’t even think he will start…pollard has been waiving that Flag but most haven’t … where is the expectation coming from?

Dejon came in with the expectation that he would be next Rob gray…Corey ended up the star that year… but Corey his junior year only took catch and shoot, literally zero off the bounce… the only person with a track record off scoring off the bounce was Dejon, so most assumed it would be him…and a top 60 recruit today for us isn’t that impressive but in 2018 it was for us… Dejon had been penciled in preseason to be our star player

This isn’t even a close debate

I agree it’s not even close… the other way…

We’re coming off of a national championship game appearance with only Pop and Flemings currently on the roster that are slotted as potential starting PGs next season. If Uzan comes back it’s a completely different story, but he’s not on the roster today…

We play way harder OOC, and in conference competition, than Dejon had to beat (margin for error is greater in the Big 12 admittedly) but so is the competition at PG throughout the league.

So, not only does Flemings have the pressure of being a potential big minutes PG as a frosh… he has it as an expected significant contributor to the anticipated #1 team in the country… yeah… no expectations.

I’m not sure why you think Flemings won’t start if Uzi is gone… national pundits are predicting it…

The only thing I worry about is pop is coming off a hip surgery, which as you know is questionable at best.

yeah it’s not a stretch if Uzan is not back that Kingston will start at some point during the season.

I actually think it’s between Harwell and Kingston who gets that last starting spot to start the season. Personally I’d go with positional size and start Harwell but I could see Kingston starting as well.

It really depends on how Coach Samp views Pop to start the season. Either the cryer mold or the lead guard initiating offense.

Everything I read leads to Cryer type role… mainly SG that also helps out at point.

I already trust flemmings more than pop. Can’t get the picture of what the coogs did to pop at tech out of my head.

You alwasy come with the oddest takes

the majority of poster here have said they dont expect him to start… there is a minutes projection thread that is active that have him at less than 20mins a game …with milos gone

our team expectations arent on kingston… cenac and sharp id understand … but they arent on kingston shoulders at all.

dejon prejoining was expected to be our 18pt star player from the start, and to lead us to our 1st sweet 16 in 40 years (no one the year before had shown any skill to create their shot)
with a bunch of crazy highlights from umass for dejon

and being better team doesnt mean you have more expectations… pj haggerty will have the most weight on his shoulders for memphis if he returns to memphis. he is the only one returning to memphis but the expectation is that he will still be the one to lead them to their 1st sweet 16 in 10years next year, despite no supporting cast… being a bench player on a top 10 teams doesnt mean you have more expectation

you are being a revisionist history if you don think the expectations werent higher for dejon…

now you personally believe kingston will start… your expectation asa person… but we are talking collective… the majority of folks here arent expecting Kingston to start day 1… espn randomly throwing together a starting 5 doesnt change that… you can look at the starting lineups on it an clearly see its not accurate

BYU
image

byu isnt starting 2 centers who cant shoot (A floor spacing team)… and they paid 3.5mil o robert wright he is starting … now that we can dispel espn as the source for who is starting

But was Samoson at that game, maybe he forgot who Pop is

Who will start over Kingston…?

I’ll put it on record that I think Kingston will start if Uzi doesn’t return AND we don’t pick up another PG in the portal.

So… if you’re the incoming frosh starting PG (We’ll agree to disagree here that you don’t think Kingston will start next season) on the team favored to win the natty preseason then you inherently have higher expectations than a guard coming in trying to resurrect a program that few are watching.
