Virgin Islands Paradise Jam - Nov 17-20 (L 84-80 Drexel)

have you watched ANY sampson interview? he has been painful honest about his evaluation of houston teams

-his first year he said half of those guys shouldnt have been D1…that he was just trying to create culture (not good)
-his second year he said we’d be “competitive” but said we werent going to be a tourney team (made nit)
-last year was the first year he said we’d win some games, but said we had no post presence or depth. “if rob or dot dont score, he’s not sure where the points are coming from”. (1 good win from a tourmey, high nit seeded team)

this was the first year he has really embraced the tourney conversation, embraced that we should be with very good… if anything sampson has been anti-coach speech and tempering expectations (“we wont be that good”)…

"Sampson said something like “well this is my best group of talent but there are a lot of teams in our conference with more talent and we don’t have a home court to play on this year so my goal is for us to finish above .500?” "
—is honestly the type of thing he would say if he really believed that, he has said much worse about our other teams

what he has said is we have talent, we have depth and noted how this team is more than capable of making a tourney…the expectation was there and embraced to be atleast tourney good this year …by our entire program

We let out a stinker no doubt and have a long ways to go before we are a good team…Shooting was very poor and inside scoring outside of Rob just wasn’t there…the good news is that Sampson teams always seem to get better as the season progresses…

What surprised me is Van Beck. The guy has been a consistent 3 point shooter. This is the first game where I have seem him NOT make a basket. That is simply weird.

i just wish we could go a few seasons without 8 new players to gel early in the season. i agree though that Sampson will straighten this out. I am not excusing the loss but the Drexel loss came without their Missouri transfer who has played a big role in their two wins if I have the right player in mind. Again, I am not excusing the loss. You cannot miss 11 FTs and go 2-18 from 3 for the supporting cast. I am going to go with it was just one of those games and yet they led for most of the game. I won’t throw away my tickets that just arrived today…Let’s see how tomorrow goes against the host school that was blown out today.

It’s one loss, it’s a bad loss but it’s one loss.’

To say we’re the 10th best team in this conference based on that? Seriously dumb take. No serious pronouncements can be made after 2 games.

because i follow the league… i can give you in depth preview of the league and i actually watch most team

ill give a mini summary;
these teams before this loss were already projected better than us : wsu, cincy, smu, ucf, temple
teams after this game i really do think have shown more at this point: uconn, memphis, tulane (tulane is undefeated, and blew out a good csu team, beat lsu in a scrimmage)

the one team that a debate could be made: tulsa

the 2 team we are definitely better than: usf and ecu

im not saying we are bad, based on us alone, but that all those teams are actually pretty decent

im not syaing who will be better at the end of the season. but at this point, just on fair evaluation on how everyone looks now…9 or 10 is where id place us

I didn’t read your dumb mini summary. Making serious pronouncements on the league is laughable 2-3 games in. You can call today’s loss a bad one (and maybe even a tournament excluding one) but you can’t make serious judgement on league standing on this tiny sample size.

We used 10 players. Rob scored 37. The other 9 guys averaged less than 5 points. In the second half Drexel’s guards blew by our guys for layups. Our best shot blocker, Chris Harris, never player and no one in the game was able to deter the layups. Curious ??

I’ll stand with my statement emphasizing that these guys are learning to play together, Samson is still learning how to use the available talent, and every year under CKS the Coogs have good better as the season goes on. How long have these guys been practicing together, two weeks? Get down off the ledge folks, I predict that we’ll be a solid team by January, and a better one by March. You heard it here, and I’m a former high school try-out who didn’t make the team. (I couldn’t “bounce” the ball very good. lol.) My South Texas high school didn’t even have a gym until my Sophomore year. FB coaches made the players go out for basketball for the conditioning. Our teams were horrible.

Does not practicing together cause 50% FT shooting?

Game was lost at ft line. Once the opponent knows you’re not making fts, it becomes a slow march to the line and certain death.

I’ve heard people say that in basketball “anybody can beat anybody.” Not sure I agree, but I will say that in basketball, one or two “incomprehensible” defeats per season generally occur and can grudgingly be tolerated.

The same cannot be said for football. That’s the thing. We’ve already had TWO “incomprehensible” football defeats this season. UGH!!!

Let’s hope that Drexel is our one and only “incomprehensible” basketball loss.
