I can agree with this. As far as a notable Texas assistant … would Ryan Elvin work there and possibly be coach in waiting if Mitchell does bolt for another job?
The delay in making an announcement is pretty lame. Every other Big 4 school with an opening has hired someone already (Arizona State with the best hire, hiring the Grand Canyon coach; but also Wisconsin, Missouri, Auburn and Arkansas have named their new coaches). Maybe BYU hasn’t - they had an interim head coach after their head coach resigned so I’m not sure if the interim is going to be the permanent head coach or not.
I’ll speculate that the delay is not good news for Mitchell’s chances. He would be the one who would need to be there early since he probably doesn’t have a staff ready to join him. I guess the delay isn’t as significant to the UTSA or ODU coaches.
It’s not like the current roster doesn’t need an immediate overhaul. There’s only something like four players on the roster right now for 2025-26.
Nunez waiting for Miss State’s season to be over to announce Dawn Staley as new UH head coach.
I’ll be Dawn!
The good news is Mississippi State’s season ended yesterday. The bad news is Staley coaches 500 miles away in Columbia, South Carolina.
Whoops, my bad. I meant South Carolina’s season to end, lol. Good catch.
So is Staley in the mix or a joke?
We wish she were in the mix.
We are in the Big 12, not the AAC anymore……so if they leave it would have to be for a really good step up….but more importantly it means the team has improved by leaps and bounds and likely made a couple of NCAA tournaments.
I’m fine with a young, hungry coach.

New WBB Coach been hired.
Love the choice.
Proven winner on the big stage. Only reason he was available was because of unique circumstances that prompted him to retire early. Very experienced, but still young enough to stick around to build this thing up from the ashes (like Coach Sampson did).
Why did he retire? Health??
So great credentials….but he hasn’t coached in like 5 years?
Wonder what the story on that is?
I don’t know enough about women’s salaries but that seems like a pretty good chunk of change.
Good to see Nunez is being bold….at the least he is showing he cares.
Edit- just looked, puts him at 47th highest paid coach in the country before blowing a whistle….pretty damn good.
That’s crazy….must have been way more than the average concussion.
Glad he’s healthy again.
He goes more in depth on his injury in this interview. Excited about this hire. He seems like he is ready to start coaching again
He will be the 4th highest paid coach in the Big 12.
