For the billionth time, that doesn’t fix this. Basically every school in a pro market — SMU, Georgia Tech, Pitt, Miami (FL), UCLA, Cal, Stanford, BC, Northwestern — all face this issue to some extent. Raw attendance numbers won’t necessarily show how bad it is for some of them, because they’ve mastered the art of bulk sales to sponsors that never show up, but secondary market prices reveal the reality. Georgia Tech is a top-10 team and yet GT @ NC State tickets cost substantially more than Pitt @ GT tickets, despite the latter being an ostensibly much better matchup. Miami (FL) is a top-10 team with tickets going in the $20 range. Even USC’s ticket prices are a fraction of the price of those at comparable bluebloods like Texas and Nebraska and OU.
Large fanbases mostly consist of t-shirt fans and it’s borderline impossible to recruit those when there are three of the largest fanbases in the sport within a five hour drive and an NFL team available for those who are more inclined to root locally. There are a few exceptions (Washington and Cincinnati, specifically, have somehow managed to avoid this to some extent) but for the most part sharing a market with an NFL team is a death knell for the durability of your fan base.

USC is a different situation as they didn’t have an NFL team in LA until 2016, so USC was the only decent football ticket in town unless you drive 90 minutes to San Diego.

And even then, they famously have an extremely fair weather fan base. (Even when they technically lacked a team, LA had and continues to have a ton of Raiders fans.)
UH biggest blunder was being in the abyss of college football during the period after the Oilers left and there was no pro football team. The Houston Cougars had an opportunity to make in roads on being the cities football team, yet UH was unwatchable during that period.
I’m not sure how feasible that actually would have been; the Texans were announced three years after the Oilers left. USC was winning national titles and Heisman trophies in LA’s 20-year NFL interregnum and they still have a fairweather fan base. And they don’t have two of the sport’s largest fanbases within a three hour drive to contend with.

I saw a giant UH flag hanging outside J bar M bbq after the Arizona game. I might check them out for the UCF game. Anyone been? It looks like they have a great outdoor space and $5 margaritas …
J Bar M is great spot for food and rink but not many TVs inside. Outside has more including one massive screen and several flat screens mounted around the patio area.
Yes, great food. Good atmosphere, great outdoor dining and drinking area. It is pricey, but it is an “upscale” BBQ joint. Must try for yourself. After Kim Son closed probably going to J Bar M more often. Great locale from UH
I was in Houston last week and the bar I went to with friends did have lots of Aggies and Tigers but there were lots of Coogs too and the Aggies and Tiger fans were paying attention to our game as well. LSU fans were loudly cheering for us.

I watched the season opener on the giant screen at the new Heights Kirby Ice House. The screen, bar, and outdoor area are huge, but I imagine there’s heated competition for that big screen on Saturdays. If we can keep winning, the games get bigger and we’ll be on all the biggest screens across town.
If we go 11-1, Coach Fritz will likely finish as COY.
