‘We could have all eyes on us.’ Behind Houston football's unconventional schedule changes - The Cougar

Looks like the AD is trying to create interest, which is good, UH being last in B12 capacity attendance, is BAD!!!

Win some games and that will change. We’ve gone 2-7 and 3-6 in conference the last 2 years.

Basically admitting our attendance would suck either way, might as well try for the non traditional spot and see if we get some TV fans.

My bigger problem with UH fans is they look to see who the opponent is to see if they are interested in the game instead of being interested in every home game

Yes…our fans avoid every day of the week ending in… -day

Brilliant Move…get as many prime-time games as possible on main TV outlets

Our #1 priority is building our brand Nationally. Out local fans have had 50 years to show up…they just won’t!

No reason to be buried on a streaming app on a crowded day.

We have to earn our prime Saturday slots

The OSU game is at 9:30 CT? That is 7:30 PST and 10:30 EST. Possibility to reach a wider audience? I like what Eddie wants to do. That one I am perplexed.

Maybe hoping to get the attention of some west coast highschoolers’ recruitment interest, except they are all playing at that time haha. Seriously a bigger audience than Saturday computer watchers.

That is what I was hoping for but then why not get us the same time slot on a Saturday? We will see how the audience translates.

The quickest way to kill our program is to agree to time slots that put us on a streaming app.

The overwhelming majority of our alums/students/ casual fans do not attend our games.

An overwhelming majority of that group will not look for a streaming app to watch our games and definitely not pay for one.

These are just the facts of the current state of our program.

Let’s focus on an ‘outside- in approach’ and build ourselves into a National brand as we’ve always had a better reputation outside of Texas than inside of Texas.

The Great brands have an ‘equal to’ or ‘greater’ brand awareness outside of their state , than in it.

Right on, the last two seasons have sucked. I sure hope that Fritz turns this thing around this year.

I have to disagree with you there. Plenty of alum have responsibilities outside of work that prevents them from going to games. Even just getting some rest after working and taking care of kids. Having games easily viewable is certainly a benefit for this large group. I only make it to a couple of games per season, but if it’s on TV then I guarantee I’ll have it on.

Unless it’s ESPN+. Screw that garbage.

That’s what I’m saying.

The overwhelming majority do NOT have attending only 6-7 home games in a 12 month span as a priority in their lives…they just don’t.

Common place for fans/alums of other schools…heck, they even drive a distance to attend those 6-7 home games.

Some may attend 1 or 2 games a year…some none.

Many will watch it on TV IF their schedules permit but even less will actively seek out an app,m and pay for one of they currently are not subscribed.

Putting us on TV and preferably where we are the main game on a main channel (any night) grows both our out of market and in market audience.

I genuinely enjoy games on fox and fox sports, im cool with doing it big on a thrusday or friday

Especially in the heat

don’t agree with the Labor Day line - people are starving for football that weekend - Friday puts you in direct competition with high school opening week - this is Houston - people aren’t going out of town like that lol

My wife and I attend all the games with my son and his wife. This schedule is awful. In order to attend a Thursday game I have to take Friday off to recover and leave home/work early to get to the game. For years our motto has been, “Come for the tailgate and stay for the game.” Now we get mediocre football without the benefit of the tailgate.
We have already paid for the tickets this year, we will see going forward.

Its a ROAD game! You think OSU worries about what time the game is on here? Starting time is what is convenient for their fans.

This schedule sucks. And the reasons used to justify it make me wonder about the new dude.

I know it is a road game Monte. Yes for OSU if they want to recruit Texas an hour earlier would be better for Texas viewers. No worries.

My work schedule as an educator completely cuts out Thursday games and most Friday games as well.just not worth the hike from where I live and fighting the night time traffic. As I have aged I can take about 1 Saturday game and that is all. The the entire process has become to much of a hassle. Never missed a single cusa home game and made about half of the aac. Now we are in the big 12 and I just don’t have that drive anymore.

So will casuals go to a Saturday 6PM kickoff against Sam Houston State, or stay home to watch Texas/Ohio St, Clemson/LSU, or Alabama/FSU?

Consider the opponent and then consider the alternatives on opening Saturday. Risk pissing off the diehards to see if you can garner an extra thousand or so fans on a Friday night on the main network.

Eddie has to think outside the box.

The thing is that adding a few more eyeballs on a Thursday night doesn’t do as much for the bottom line as having people at the games.

If he’s just assuming that nobody will come to the games, then just play l road games and get paid or something.

Moving these games to off nights doesn’t do any more for us now than it did in the pre-B12 games. Our biggest challenge is fans at games, not TV-watchers.
