What would a Dana Holgorsen-UH staff look like?

Sums it up.

Tyron Carrier coming back here would be incredible if he’s about it. I only got to see him my freshman year but the dude was electric on the field
and he’s earned his share of accolades over at WVU coaching too.

so You’re saying Jimbo Fisher and Applewhite are also comparable head coaches then?

If you’re saying he’s being overpaid that’s one thing. I could see that argument. But you can’t take a cursory look at a win loss record and say they are equal in ability.

On the flip side Lots of coaches have had great success at smaller programs and gone on to struggle at larger ones. If your point was accurate that would be highly unlikely to happen.

“Holgorsen is likely to take a number of Mountaineer assistants with him to Houston, most notably being wide receivers coach Tyron Carrier, who played under Holgorsen for the Cougars in 2008 and 2009. Offensive line coach Joe Wickline is another Mountaineer assistant possible to find a landing spot on the Cougars’ coaching staff. It’s unclear if any of the defensive staff will follow Holgorsen to Texas.”

The defense is the biggest question mark for me. WVU 2018 record did not show me that they could stop our future offense. Unfortunately this has been the downfall for the Mike Leach offense for every program that uses it. I am 100% for Dana coming. Our current defense is in terrible shape & needs to be fixed quickly. Let’s get a proven defensive specialist that can be the yang to this yin offense. Let’s see how this develops.

All that is needed to attract the top defensive coaching prospects is $$$.

WVU had a quality defense starting the season. They lost most of their LBs to injury early and switched to a 4-2-5 to compensate but injuries didn’t stop. Quality depth was an issue.

Spot on coach, a lot of people do not realize that. And unlike our situation, their DC actually made adjustments and change the scheme to suit what he had available. At times it worked, other times it didn’t, but at least adjustments were made. Much better than continuing to run a 3-4 defense with a 240 pound freshman DT, just my opinion.

In regards to Tony, I would never say never but
my understanding is

  1. He really wants to spend more time with his family. I’ve talked to a couple people that know him. Any college football coach will be putting in 70-90 hours a week or more.
  2. I think a pre-requisite of owning a Chik fil-a is that you can’t have another job. I suppose he could turn it over to a family member but I’m not sure that you can.
  3. I think he feels that he is done as a college football coach until his kids grow up and maybe forever.

No. That’s not what I am saying.

The latter is correct. I don’t think Holgorsen is going to give $1M buyout + $4M a year results. Although, I am pleasantly surprised by the assistant pool.

I believe it will be more of a great offense, an average to bad defense, in contention for the division title year in and year out. It’s hilarious that people think we all of a sudden are going to dominate the American because of Holgorsen.

Edit: Just saw the news about Gibbs. If he comes back, that might change my mind. Would love to see that. Is that Tilman telling Dana this is who you want and going along with it, or is that Dana choosing?

Do you think that we can ever dominate the American? If you do, why would one of the best offensive coaches that has HC experience not get it done? If he can’t, then I suspect that dominating the American is not possible for us.

I think the top schools in our conference are just as effective as us in utilizing the resources available to them and they are in recruiting hotbeds as well.

Memphis - great coach who has stuck around and great recruiting in Memphis, not Houston good, but not bad

UCF - great support from admin, recruiting just as good as Houston, good coaching.

USF/Temple - good recruiting, Strong is a retread. Temple seems to get the hiring right. Admin needs to get a stadium done, which they are both trying to do.

Cincy - in my opinion the best coach in our conference, admin willing to spend, great recruiting area, and they are getting those recruits.

Yeah, I think you are underestimating Houston’s position compared to those in our conference. There are some really good coaches, better than Dana Holgorsen good, and some of those schools are in really good/great recruiting areas.

This is a unique conference. We aren’t the MW/BigXII/ACC with one dominant team and a couple of contenders. We aren’t the Big10 with two name brand teams and a bunch of fillers. The American can be won year in and year out by any of the teams listed above.

Gibson’s not coming
doesn’t want to leave WVU.

@shawn_rine
Looks like the WVU players are coming out in full support of Tony Gibson being elevated to head coach. #Dawgs

Wasn’t DeForest the guy calling himself Mr. Texas or something like that?

My question is, are you saying you’re OK with 7-6 or 8-4 because he isn’t from UT, has HC experience, and not a continuation hire? That sounds wierd to hold new HC’s to a higher standard than experienced ones.

Lol yeah I totally remember that!

Good questions. Yes to all of them. I have more confidence in CDH being able to right a ship that he steered wrong because he’s been there done that. Look at hoops. 2 years ago about 33% of us were calling for CKS head because we couldn’t break out of CBI/NIT bubble land. We have to have the same patience with CDH. We can’t fire coaches every 2 years. We have a proven commodity on Cullen now. Trust him with the keys for a while. 2019 is year 0. And yes CDH does not have the coaching resume that CKS does but like CKS he’s among the best proven head coaches our program could have gotten.

And I don’t like Longhorns. Never have, never will.

I think CMA might have won 7 next year. But this year he should have won at least 10. Easiest schedule ever. So yeah, without the best defensive player ever, with an amazing returning offense, 8 is okay next year. Hopeful for about 10. I had no hope with CMA for next year.

Any coach that gets offended for what these psychologically insane, no coaching experience fans say, on these crazy boards, is insane himself.
