The early rounds of the NCAA tournament?
I know we’ve hosted the Final Four but why aren’t we in the rotation for the early games?

CoH = City of Houston? Is this a thing people say?
I think you’re asking when was the last time Houston had a regional? Y’all need to get better at googling.
Houston hosted regionals in 1973, 1980, 1986, 2008, 2010, and 2015. Will host a regional in 2026.
First and second rounds not so much. 1961, 1971, 1983 and 1985.
I’m guessing the larger cities are preferred for regionals and not 1st/2nd round games.
We were also scheduled to host a regional in 2020 (it was cancelled bc of COVID).
If “by people” you mean how the city literally refers to itself on its own website then, yes
I remember very vividly attending the NCAA Regional Tournament Semifinal at The Summit in 1980. It was the “Doctors of Dunk” Louisville Cardinals vs Texas A&M. Louisville was a heavy favorite and got the opening tip and Darrell Griffith drove the lane for a thunderous dunk on the first play. Texas A&M G David Britton got the inbound pass drove the length of the floor and did his own thunderous dunk and the crowd went wild. It was Game On!
Louisville ended up winning the game in OT, 66-55. Louisville then went on to win the NCAA National Championship that year.
So…we haven’t hosted the opening rounds in 40 years?
Hopefully, Tilman can get us in the rotation by using the Toyota Center.
We wouldn’t need NRG for those rounds
I think the last time the first round was in Houston the games were at Hofheinz.
This is kind of a weird thing but in all 6 of our Final Four appearances, we came out of the Midwest region. Here we are again in the Midwest region.
In 61 is was at Delmar Fieldhouse.
71 and 85 it was in Hofheinz.
In 83 it was in the Summit.
These were just 1st/2nd round games.
My guess is the NCAA wants to grow the game, so it gives the opening rounds to smaller markets. Then the later rounds to bigger markets that can accommodate bigger crowds.
We played our 1st/2nd round games in Memphis last year which already has an NBA team.
I do think using smaller markets for the 1st/2nd rounds is the right way to go.
Even if Houston hosted a regional, it’s not like they’ll put us on that side of the bracket.
I have never seen a team play in a regional in their home city.
Each site is hosted by a NCAA institution; a team can’t play at a site their school is hosting. If we could get Rice to host solo, we could play at Toyota. I think, but not positive.
I remember at the Final Four in 2023, it was UH, Rice, TSU, and HCU that hosted it so the revenue was split.
You are in the rotation for regionals and final fours. Why would you want to be in the lesser rotation for first weekend?
UH is always a co-host of Tournament games here and, therefore, could not play in a first weekend in Houston.
because you’d get more games and cheaper prices for the average fan, than the Final Four prices
The final four is 3 games plus the opening rounds are in more “basketball appropriate” venues…not a football stadium.
How many games would we get if we hosted the opening two rounds?
I attended the 2023 Final Four in Houston and the prices were dirt cheap for all semis and the final.
Duke basically is right now… Raleigh and Durham are 10 minutes away from each other
That’s why it’s Raleigh-Durham Airport…
