Why AAU

Money received by a university for research is not spent on athletics.

A university receives royalty money if a patent results from research. That enriches the university. It can be spent in any way.

Royalty money is not “chump change”. See:

UH is in the top 100 universities receiving patents.
Over decades it will build a very different university.

Wisely, UH has been busy increasing the number of members in the National Academies. This does not mean much to most people. Consider:

"Election to the National Academy of Inventors Fellows Program is the highest professional distinction accorded solely to academic inventors. To date, fellows hold more than 42,700 issued U.S. patents, which have generated more than 13,000 licensed technologies and companies, and created more than 36 million jobs.

In addition, more than $2.2 trillion in revenue has been generated based on National Academy of Inventors fellows’ discoveries."

Number of members in the National Academies is a good choice as one of four primary metrics used by the AAU.

The patents thing is huge.

My lab is working on something that could primarily service the TMC and sooner or later, hospitals around the world. Licensing stuff will go towards the patent, and UH is going to get a huge cut of it. The rest goes to my advisor and myself I believe.

If there are contract negotiations for the patent, should I just ask '50% of your royalties convert to Cougar Pride points"

Heck yeah! Field Passes for me in many years!
