Why is our band so small?

I noticed Thursday night that SFA seemingly had more band members in our stadium than we did. It’s not the first time that’s been true for an opponent — it happens pretty regularly against the Baylors and Techs of the world — but SFA in particular surprised me. Why is our band smaller than one from a school with a student population and a stadium capacity 1/4 the size of ours? Why are we seemingly the only ones with no flag twirlers? Surely their budget can’t be that much larger than ours, right?

I noticed the same thing i thought the band was smaller than last year’s. Does the band recruit or try to influence kids in high school to join. I remember when i graduated high school i decided to go to UH and was in band in high school so i just thought being in a college band would be cool

What is the official size of our band, just counting instrument playing members ?
Anybody know if that number has changed over time ?
I read we now have 25 tuba players; have we had more in the past ?

If I had massive wealth, I would like to see a full scholarship for every band member. The band is the key element in sustaining school spirit. Wish the band
got more support and respect.

I don’t know about sfa but a lot of college bands are funded by athletics. SoH is not. Seems a shame considering what they bring to the gameday experience.

Spirit of Houston band is right under 300. SFA Band is a little over 300. Both bands hover near 300 give or take with SFA a little bigger. Our band is not “so small” compared to SFA.

Baylor has about 300 as well. UT has about 340. Going back to SFA, they have a top music program in the nation.

Spirit of Houston band receives a significant portion of its funding through its involvement with University of Houston football games and the athletics program. There are portion of ticket sales that go to the band program too.

  1. Oregon State sells beatboxes in-stadium and I feel like that would immediately fix any stadium atmosphere issues for us

Didn’t notice Spirit of Houston today at the Oklahoma St game. Lack of funding?

We didn’t even send cheer or Shasta. Didn’t send anyone to Oregon State either. It’s a terrible look for the school. Do better.

Send them some money lol, we never traveled to far away games either when I was in the band, no Lubbock or Arkansas etc etc. imagine the cost for hotels, food, etc etc for all those people to go to one away game

I do. I gave the money to send them to Kansas City for the basketball tournaments because the school wasn’t going to. It’s pathetic. And the full SOH travelled to Stillwater when we were a G5. I know we don’t have the funds to send them to every game but we are the new Temple with not even sending cheer squads.

Either you value it or not - that’s a lot of practice to do nothing

Might as well go swac where the bands are at least valued all year around

No cheer, dolls, band, or mascots at

Oregon State
Oklahoma State
Arizona State

Really pathetic move from UH. And we wonder why we don’t create more fans. Those kids bust their butts with practice, cheering multiple sports, and doing parades and appearances all over town and get treated poorly.
