Four automatic cfp qualifiers for the big10 and sec is a ransom demand. I could care less about the potential for three for us. Have you ever heard of the cfp ranking and how they favor…the big10 and sec? Demanding four automatic bids for the big10 and sec is unacceptable. The BIG12 and acc accept this demand? Then there are no limits to this. This is already an increase from what we had. Next time they will ask for five and so on.
Both the sec and big10 are threatening all schools that if we do not abide by their ransom demand they will form their own league. College football is not the nfl but the media powers clearly want to copy that format. If espn and other media giants were not for it they would already have expressed their displeasure. Did they? They are clearly part of these demands. Are we going toward a class action lawsuit to “slow down” these demands? It sure looks that way and frankly the time has come that it is now needed.
Mr. Yormark has clearly indicated that he is against a two cfp automatic bids advantage. But would that be enough?
I would go for 3 guaranteed to their 4
I dunno. It’ll all be settled on the field anyways so m’eh. You’ll either be good enough or a sham. I’m looking forward to fielding a competitive team and pulling some “upsets.”
Message from the big10 and sec to the rest:
I think the big12 and Acc get 3 out of this deal. Logically , the format won’t go past 16 and the Acc and big12 are ok with them getting 4 and we get 3 so I think that is where it ends up. I don’t see us backing down at this point and the sec would be looking greedy to not accept it when they are getting their 4. The point was made that the sec and big already make more money off their tv deal than we do and getting 1 more than we do should be acceptable. Congressman are pushing back against them so I think the big12 and Acc win this deal and get a 4 to 3 deal.
Historically it would be tough for us to ever get 3 in anyway if it’s left as conference champs only and just at large spots. In that case the sec and big would gobble up all at large spots by crying each yr and the endless espn saying how many spots will make them happy this yr and when done espn will say again the sec and big dominated by grabbing all free spots further pushing their agenda. Best case is to grab 2 or 3 auto bids and I think we settle on a 4 to 3 .
No chance we should settle for two with a chance for three. NONE. It is either guaranteed three or none.
If they are good enough they will earn the at-large spots. Only equal guarantees is the fair answer. There are some years where that 4th team might be ranked in the low teens or high 20s.
What if in 5 years the Big 12 starts to beat the B1G teams regularly. If in writing then the good teams get left out for the name teams.
Not to mention perception becomes reality - writing that you are second class will impact recruiting and long term make it harder for Big 12 and ACC schools to have equal play.
True. But you aren’t hoping to be part of the fourth best team in a conference when you commit.
Nothing to do with hoping to be on the 4th best team. It is players wanting to play in the “best” conference. And the conference that is guaranteed four bids is on paper better than a conference guaranteed 2 or 3 bids.
simple math: 4 is greater than 3 (or 2)
Interesting thread. Because the SEC and Big 10 will literallly say eff you and do their own thing. The Big 12 and ACC each getting at least 2 is a good deal. The SEC wants to play 9 games so their rankings are going to tank as half the teams will get an extra loss. It’s a good deal. Do you honestly think the top 4 in the SEC and Big 10 don’t deserve spots in a sixteen team playoff? Come on.
I think that it’s the average of a $25+ million greater NIL program (per school) that is expected to help keep the SEC & BIG10 at a competitive advantage for the procurement of top talent in order to be viewed as the “best” conferences. (This additional funding competitive advantage will likely come primarily from their larger media rights contracts.)
And so it seems to me that while the playoffs are important, they are not the end-all, be-all; but rather they are just another important part of this new pro/collegiate football program equation.
It depends how it works out…If it is 4-4-3-3 with 2 open spots, then yes, Big 12 and ACC will accept that. 4-4-2-2 with 4 open spots is a lot less attractive and our commish is already on record as saying no way SEC/BIG should get 2 more auto spots than Big 12. If SEC/BIG demand 4, then Big 12/ACC should demand 3. Excessive open spots create a demand problem. The 4 Power leagues taking all but 2 creates stability, becaue no conference is EVER giving up bids…I think 4-4-3-3 takes care of all the power conferences and leaves a spot for ND. So lets see what happens.
It’s hard not to be amused by the idea the the Sec and B1G are calling the shots. They’ll do whatever the people paying them tell them to do.
eff you you write?
and they would do their own thing?
THEN LET’S HAVE A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT BUDDY BOY
All FBS Div I schools spent a total of $B’s yes $B’s to stay relevant. They want to break away? Pay that money back. Let’s see how many will indeed leave.
Got the simple math, which is why I made the comment. My point is the practical value of having the fourth best team included. If you think it has value then that is your perspective.
Other comments regarding NIL describe the bigger factor.
The other reasons that the big10 and sec want four-four-two-two, one indi, 1 G5 is for the cfp committee to give them both more at large bids. You can be sure the cfp will make sure the two left out at large will be rated high and belong to the big10 and sec.
You don’t agree?
See what happened with March Madness. This was unprecedented. Do you think that is a coincidence? Think again.
Your right that the sec and big will grab the at large spots just like in bb this yr.
I’m thinking it will end up 4,4,3,3 then 1 for ND and 1 for a g5.
The Acc and big12 banding together will make it happen and I don’t see the big12 and Acc backing off . The sec and big make more money from their tv deal and get 1 more bid each so that should be enough is what the big 12 and Acc are saying.
If they back off we are history.
Need to see a source projecting that differential. I have seen the proposal which will regulate the validity of NIL.
Even then it is not just one factor. Suppose a player is offered $100,000 from a B1G school and the same from a Big 12 school, the difference could be the conference prestige. Lots of factors go into it, I do not know why any rational fan of the Big 12 would voluntarily give up any advantage. Even if not the only one.
“Well they have this other advantage of more money so we should just let them have all advantages” - loser way of thinking.
What practical value to having the 4th best team included? There is no team playing to be 4th best and no one can predict who that 4th team would be season to season. The specific team concept does not apply.
It is which conference is better. The one with 4 bids gets the perception of being the better CONFERENCE. Does not matter who the 4th team actually is.
As I posted to NIL comment - loser thinking that just because a school has another advantage, then we should give them this one too.
