I can see this happening. Since many of the lower bowls are just there for the gambling addicts and content for espn, I can see many of those getting replaced by an 8 or 16 team NIT.
There are too many bowl games when they can’t find enough 6-6 teams to qualify for a bowl and bring in teams with losing records. It used to be prestigious to make a bowl, now, you have players sit out because of their draft prospect or teams that would rather pay the conference fine and not participate.
I remember when Sam Houston accepted the invitation to CUSA and left the FCS that some of their fans wern’t happy. They’d rather have a chance to make the playoffs than get invited to “Dave’s Hot Dog Bowl.”
I could also see some four teams mini tournaments. Open with home games then have a two week break, heck maybe 3, for the neutral destination game. The 2-3 weeks giving fans more time to schedule.
Hawaiian Bowl should definitely do that. Kids might be pumped to play for a shot to go there.
Considering many of the bowls are owned by ESPN… this is only happening if ESPN sees a benefit in it.
