When did Baylor start doing this? I attended UH starting in '86. I don’t remember counting points that year. I’m thinking it started around '88. I don’t remember if we used a bell then or if it was just percussion.
I dont remember any other SWC team counting points before I left in '91. Maybe they did and i didn’t notice or pay attention. I only went to 2 games in Waco.
Can any other old time Cougars confirm or deny my worsening memory?
That will probably work great in the student section. There is a high probability many Coog fans will have T-sips or horned frogs next to them. Do we lock arms with them too?
The Baylor Bell. They had it in the 1970s when UH played them in the SWC. Maybe someone at Baylor found it as annoying as me and decided to stop it.
I do have to admit though, during the Run and Shoot era, counting Shasta’s push-ups by the bell when UH was running up the score and having Shasta so tired he was staggering on the sidelines was kind of funny.
While Kyle Field was undergoing renovations and the graves lost their view of the scoreboard that had a corp guy hold a whiteboard with the current score for the dead dogs viewing pleasure.
While they were enclosing that end of the stadium and therefore blocking the view of the scoreboard that the dogs enjoyed, they used the whiteboard. The completed renovations included a ground level scoreboard outside the place directly in front of the dogs.
I’m not going to use a picture of anything aggie-related here but if you google aggie dog scoreboard you’ll see the new doggie board.
One of the unique things I remember at the Dome were the Buggy Beauties and the massive Spirit of Houston pregame spelling out Houston, then Cougars then UH. Classic precision and energy, it got the game started before pregame video which gave you goose bumps, the music the hits the big wins over UT and A&M. That was over 50 years ago and I still remember it.
If it’s fun and engages fans the it’s not about copyikg others as much as it is about building our own base. If our kids want to sway to Womp Womp then that’s as Cougar as it gets.
I think the band director that was responsible for our success was Bill Moffett. At half time the band was in position on the sidelines rather than the end zone . They would do a high stepping quick march
onto the field and go into their routine. When they were finished they did the same quick march off the field . The Band called it “23 Skidoo” .Great spirit !
Go Big12 Coogs !
